Multiple users at the same time

Hello,

I am not sure if this is the correct subforum to post in, if not sorry.

I got a simple yet not sure if possible idea. I got the idea when friends come over and I have no second / third / possibly fourth machine for them but since my machine is such an overkill I was thinking about sharing the machine with multiple people. However I am not sure if this is possible and if it is how to.

What I basicly want is:
I have 1 central machine , 4 monitors , 4 keyboards , 4 mouses. Each of those require their own login and take part on the central machine.

I forsee the problem for identifying the screen/keyboard/mouse (possibly sound). But maybe it is possible.

There are a number of possibilities, depending on precisely what you want to do.

There is also other similar software available.

You can also run a VPN like Hamachi where all the machines are connected to the net.

Otherwise, you would be better off with a "Home Network", which Windows 7 can run easily. But you will need as many complete machines as you have users, and the requisite peripheral hardware ( Cables, Router, etc )for your application.

There used to be software that would handle that, but I haven't heard anything about it since then. I'm not sure why you'd want to do that, as anything worthwhile, such as gaming...would need a dedicated system.

Use with Windows Media Center

I was thinking that it would be nice if I could log in to the computer in the background using windows media center without bumping off whoever was logged in at the time.

I wanted to to be able run windows media center on a TV without occupying the computer while I am doing it.

"Logmein Ignition" & 2 Windows users at once

I want to log in to my desktop from my tablet remotely using "Logmein Ignition". But then my wife cant use that computer as I am then logged into the desktop. So I wanted to know if I can log in as described and see my own desktop while my wife is simultaneously viewing her desktop on the monitor physically attached to the window7 machine. I do not want to use a VM as I am trying to access Quickbooks and do not want to install Quickbooks in multiple locations.

Any ideas out there?

Ask them. I have no way to know how that program works.

Wild guessing, if it is using the same infrastructure of Windows Remote Desktop (the builtin remote desktop utility), then there is a very simple hack that allows multiple users to be connected at the machine at the same time.
THis page tells you what you need to do, but both links are broken.
This seems to be an autopatcher doing what is described in the page above.
DO AT YOUR OWN RISK (as with all hacks anyway).

I guess that it's a server feature they left out of non-server version of Windows 7.

What you describe sounds like a server with smart terminals. Each terminal would have a network connection and the server would run something like XWindows to send the graphics commands to the terminal. Each connected setup would have it's own sound graphics mouse and keyboard. I would look for some software that does XWindows on Windows.

XWindows is commonly used on Linux. But the idea of it is rather than send all the pixels for each image over the network, the commands the terminal needs to do the drawing/animation are sent. Each smart terminal runs its own X engine and does the drawing locally.

edit: however this strategy was used in corporate environments where it was cheaper to have one big server and a bunch of smart terminals. The reason was PCs with lots of memory and fast processors were expensive. Now you can probably go down to Best Buy and get the PC with a couple of GB ram and a dual core CPU for a few hundred bucks. Might cost you more than that for a smart terminal these days. The power of electronics just changes very quickly.

Don't worry. Smart terminals are just as obsolete now as a year ago.

The guy in post 5 is asking a different thing from the OP. He want styo connect to PC with a software that does it from his tablet (and this works) while his wife is also logged in the same machine.

Also, smart-ish terminals are coming back, if what I'm seeing is true. All companies that offload used PCs to me and other shops are replacing them with network-booted nettops (a desktop version of a netbook) and run all the real tasks on servers.

Not graphic-intensive jobs, as for that I still see dedicated towers, but for the average corporate grunt's needs.

That you posted answering the OP and not the guy posting his question in the wrong place (because he isn't asking the same thing as he has already a terminal-like machine he want s to connect at the same time, unlike the OP that has only screens keyboards and mice).
