Hi,

This may sound a little silly but are you trying to clean the lens or listen to the music? the reason i ask this is because the drive works fine and no lens clean is needed, a normal audio CD should work regardless if it can read data discs (msoffice) why you may ask, all the drive does is read data, CD audio isn't any different, it's just a format that is read like anything else (CDA format), might be that the region is set incorrectly on that drive.

I was trying both to test if the problem was with the cleaning disc, but i put any music cd and it won't play. I right-click the drive icon and manually opened it, then clicked any of the tracks. Windows Media opens, but don't play. I tried VLC and the same happens. This occurs with original and burned discs.

If a "data" CD reads OK, then a "music" CD will also read and there is another problem, not the drive. All content on CD's is really "data", just what type of data.

Did this work OK but now doesn't? If that is the case did you install or uninstall anything recently?

No changes i can remember. I tried Ashampoo to rip the cd to mp3 and it works so that means the drive is working good.

I'm at a loss if nothing has happened with the PC and it had worked.

To eliminate any Windows corruption with the drive, go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the drive and then LEFT click "uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the driver, which is a built in Windows driver. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the drive. Then give it a try.

Hi there

If it's only a few specific CD's you have problems with simply try cleaning the CD manually rather than the Lens in the CD hardware.

A bit of CLEAN cold water on a soft tissue should work fine -- remember CD's are OPTICAL so you aren't going to damage the disc this way. Ensure the CD is DRY before attempting to play it.

CD's IMO do degrade over time -- I'd RIP all your music CD's with a decent CD ripper --I still have WINAMP PRO which also tags the tracks as well but as WINAMP isn't available any more (except on the usual torrent sites) there are other rippers.

Once you've ripped the CD you can actually re-create a CD on HDD if you want -- and using a virtual CD mounter (Win 7) or the built in virtual CD / DVD mounter (Win 8/8.1) you can play as a physical CD. You can of course also burn to a new physical CD too if you must.

I have ripped all my CD's to HDD - makes a good archive too - and if I want to play these I just stream from computer to hardware (decent "Old School pre-amp and studio quality speakers) via my streaming hardware.

I'd try and get away from physical CD's these days - if you buy any RIP to HDD as soon as possible. FLAC preserves the original quality and a typical FLAC audio CD is around 250 MB at the most.

Most cars have an AUX IN for playing music - so you could copy music to say a micro SD card on a smart phone and play the music via the AUX IN on the car radio - you don't need to have a physical CD player in the car any more either.

Cheers
jimbo

I uninstalled the drive from device manager and re-detected it, but it did not helped. Maybe a problem with codecs?
