Just started a new issue and I don't know how to fix it. There are two drivers showing up for my wireless Realtek RTL8188CE driver. One is from 2011 and the other from 2013. Every time I start my computer, Windows 7 Premium Home, I have to reinstall the 2013 version to use the internet. I can connect OK but pages won't load until I go to Properties and Drivers and chose the 2013 version and install it. Then everything is fine until I shut down and restart, like the next day. I also can not get Network Diagnostic Policy Service to run. I have done a Google search and tried all of the fixes I can find and none of them work. The Service will start and then immediately shut down. Help me, PLEASE. I have been working on this for days. I even did a system restore with no luck. Chuck

just click on the link in post #3. The "access denied" words might have thrown you for a loop, but that's a bug in the forum. The link takes you to a page that tells you how to find a device's Hardware ID. Aka the PCI/VEN number.

There are a few things that could be your issue. Here are the steps I would take

1) Download the driver from the microsoft site for your pci/ven number. Here it is. Don't install it yet though

Microsoft Update Catalog

2) physically remove your offending network drivers. Go into device manager, right click on the network adapter and select uninstall. When it asks you if you want to also delete the software for this device, say yes. Then reboot.

3) Upon that second boot windows may install a different driver for your device. If that happens, repeat step 2 again until windows does not find any software to install for the device.

4) Then install the driver you downloaded in step 1. If your problem is then fixed, great. If it is not fixed, I'm betting this is not a driver problem.

5) reset windows network settings. Do start > run > cmd, then execute the following commands:
ipconfig /flushdns
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -RR
netsh int reset all
netsh int ipv4 reset
netsh int ipv6 reset
netsh winsock reset
then reboot

6) If your problem persists, you may have a router problem. I have no thoughts on how to troubleshoot it other than to reboot the router, and/or update its firmware. But if its a problem with the router hardware, your best bet is to see if the problem also happens when on a different router

7) If none of the above fixes it, it could be that your network adapter is failing. Failing hardware can product weird symptoms.

8) Its also possible its something I am not thinking of.

Thanks but I have tried all of those except download from Microsoft. The drive from the Microsoft catalog is an older one than the installed driver on my computer. Highly unlikely my router is the problem since two other Windows 7 machines run juts fine with the same router. Your suggestions are all things I found and tried using Google search and none have resolved the issue. Once I reinstall the more current driver, I get two options, it will work just fine for many hours until I shut down. Then I have to go in and reinstall the newer driver, the 2013 version. I can't figure out how to find the 2011 driver and delete it from the computer. I have tried the show hidden drivers in the device manager and it does not show up. As long as both these drivers are on this computer the problem persists. Under system 32, only one driver at a time shows. In steps 2 and 3, both drivers get reinstalled over and over. In a possible related or unrelated issue, I can not get the Diagnostic Policy Service to run which would maybe allow me to troubleshoot connection issues. Again, I have done all of the suggestions based on Google searches and none have worked. Chuck

That doesn't mean your driver file is not corrupted. The age of the driver is less meaningful than the reliability of the driver. If the microsoft driver had issues, it would not be there.

Highly unlikely my router is the problem since two other Windows 7 machines run juts fine with the same router.
You won't know if your router is the problem until you re-create your issue when using another router. If you drive three cars over a road with nails and only one gets a flat, you don't pronounce the road fine and blame the tires of the one car just because its the only car that got a flat.

Once I reinstall the more current driver, I get two options, it will work just fine for many hours until I shut down. Then I have to go in and reinstall the newer driver, the 2013 version.
When hardware fails it sometimes presents itself as a driver issue since the driver is to go-between the hardware and the operating system. If you have no issues when the computer is just turned on and the issue only presents itself later, it could be that the slow heat build-up is triggering the hardware failure. And different driver versions can hook into the hardware in different ways, causing one to be even less reliable with broken hardware than the other, though both fail eventually. Heat exacerbates all computer hardware issues and cold often prevents them. Then again, heat gets blamed for about 2000% of the problems it creates so no reason to be conclusive yet that this is a hardware problem.

I can't figure out how to find the 2011 driver and delete it from the computer.
You do need to delete both drivers then install a third driver you have not used, such as the microsoft driver. Samurai has posted good input how to do that.

If that does not work, you need to figure out a way to make windows believe you do not have an adapter installed because deleting a driver for a live device is difficult. If your laptop has a power switch for the wireless adapter, turn it off.

If you do not have a power switch, there may be a bios setting to turn the adapter off.

If you can get the device off, then use Uwe's Device Cleanup tool to delete all drivers for non-present devices.

Tools for Windows

If that does not work, you can always tell gpedit not to keep installing drivers automatically for the adapter. Start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation > Device Installation Restrictions, double-click on "Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs", then switch the status of the preference to enabled. Then when you delete the drivers AND tell windows "yes" when asked if you want to delete all software for the drivers, that should remove them. You will know you have succeeded once you can boot without windows finding a driver for the device. At that time you can then install a driver you have not used before, such as the microsoft driver.

This is a Toshiba laptop so I reached out to them and they sent me drivers since I don't have a Windows disk for the laptop. I was able to remove all the previous drivers and install the ones Toshiba sent. That seems to have resolved the issue. Thanks very much for all the help. I still need to fix the Diagnostic Policy Service, so I'll start another thread for that. Chuck
