mute pc while playing music

is it poss to set up win 7 to only play whats comming through the media player?
so if im playing music with vlc you dont hear any notifications or can browse without a site audio comming out my speakers?

right click on on the speaker icon and select:
"Open Volume mixer"
and move the volume selector on system sounds to "0"

You can also click the Mute button which will eliminate the need to reduce the volume to 0
