Mute WMC Only

I've just installed an InfiniTV 4 tuner with a cable card and it works great. My only gripe about the whole thing is when I want to mute TV.

When I'm viewing Live TV, I click on the Mute button. Yes, the sound mutes, but unfortunately it mutes the entire system's sound. Are there any settings or registry hacks I can apply, such that clicking the mute option will only mute Windows Media Center, and not all Windows sounds?

Before anyone mentions this, yes I am fully aware of clicking on the sound icon from the System Tray, selecting the Mixer and manually muting the individual Windows Media sound. I'm looking to idiot proof this for a lesser computer literate relative.

I looked for the same thing a couple of times, and the work-around you mentioned appears to be the lesser or evils. I'm sure it's possible to automate the process and link it to a hot key or other shortcut, but I don't know if anyone has done so. Microsoft should include an option of which volume level to control.

F8=Clicking Mute. Same affect.

If you're familiar with AutoHotKey, I did try this with no luck. Maybe the code was written for Windows Vista, even though it clearly stated that there was a Windows 7 version posted, which I had used.

It looks like you've already had a bunch of really good ideas which didn't work out. Looking around the web indicates that you're not the only one trying to do this without success. I'm still mystified that there isn't a fix for the Full Screen/Mouse Trap issue.

I know earlier I was working on some schoolwork and wanted the video-only for a BB game and did the good old Mixer routine. It would be nice to have a one-button way to do that. If it's a nuisance for me I can see where a novice user could get into all sorts of trouble.

Instead of clicking the Mute button on Windows Media Center, why not just manually lower the volume from 50 to 0? Maybe that will prevent it from muting the whole system as well.

Which volume? The Minus sign within WMC or the WMC volume in the mixer? The latter defeats the purpose of this thread. Lowering the volume via the Minus sign eventually mutes the entire system.

Figured it out!!

In your sound card properties deselect 'Allow Applications to take exclusive control'. I've been trying to figure this out for months and just got it during a commercial break this weekend, so happy! I can individually adjust the level of all programs and listen to Pandora and WMC etc at the same time!
