Muted everytime

I use MSN to talk to my friends. Everytime we connect, the microphone on my laptop are muted. i have to go to cp to unmute it. What is the error? how to fix it?

As odd as this may sound.....pun intended. This could be a great safety feature so you don't say something you could regret until you activate the mic.
