Windows 7 detects my good ol 21" CRT no problem if I plug it up directly

but thru my new Ultra GammaView 4055 it doesn't detect it and instead i get the Generic Non-PNP Monitor @ 60Hz

This is one of the single greatest new hardware buys I've made in quite some time :)

Any ideas how I could get Win7 to reconize it through the kvm?

Which monitor is it - you might find an older driver.

Just update win7 manually to the correct driver and point the colour calibration to the driver that appears in colour management area.

Right click on display screen, Screen res > advanced settings > point to correct monitor driver & colour driver(profile)

@neo101: Rock on! :D

Here's what I did ( thanks to everyone here and my i.t. friend for all the help ):

I plugged up my 21" to the win7 machine with both VGA cables ( my 21" has two ) but I connected one of the cables directly to the first display port on the win7 machine. I also connected the second cable which is going into my kvm switch to the other port on my win7 machine.

I did the key sequence to reset the kvm a few times during this process so i don't know if that had anything to do with it or not ( i kinda doubt it )

What happened was the first monitor in win7 reports as my Dell 21" and gives me the option for 85Hz so i set it to 85Hz and keep the changes

Then!

I checked the frequencey setting in the second video port which reads as Generic Non-pnp Monitor and it now finally has the option for 85Hz; i set it to 85Hz and keep my changes

Now it works perfectly!!

One note; after all of this: I checked the box for use this display as my main display on the second monitor port ( the one with the Generic non-pnp monitor i.e. using the kvm switch ) and now i can use my kvm with no apparent problems :D :D :D :D

Thanks Everyone!!!

You can go a step further & load correct driver for monitor if Win 7 has one!

In computer management > monitors - jot down the driver name it correctly found ie Dell Advanced 21TE

right click on 'generic' monitor driver
> update driver software
> "Browse my computer"
> "Let me pick driver"
> UNCHECK "show compatible hardware"
> Scroll down to dell drivers (manufacturer box)
> click/highlight 'dell' in left box - right box will now show Dell drivers
> scroll to compatable driver you wrote down ie Dell Advanced 21TE in right box
> click on driver/highlight - then click 'next'(bottom of screen) and force the driver loading (ignore any warnings)

You should now have correct monitor driver loaded.

You will have to do this each time you stick a newer nvidia/ati driver on too!

Awesome Thanks neo101 :D

I did what you said but unfortionately windows7 didn't list my monitor ( weird because if i plug it up directly and not through the kvm then it will see it correctly )

and every option only gives 60 Hz :(

Try 'force updating' the driver with an older vista/XP monitor driver that is probably available on t'web!

Make a "restore" point first if u r going to mess around with drivers! Saves loads of hassle.

Right click on monitor in device manager
> Update Software
> Browse my computer for software
> Click on the "Browse" grey button

- then point Win7 to the driver you have ready on your CD drive, floppy drive, USB stick, etc

Just ignore the warnings and force it - it might work fine.

It was caused by the KVM switch you used did not pass the correct EDID of your monitor to Windows 7 system correctly.

To solve this problem
1). Add an EDID emulator between connected system and the existing KVM switch or
2) Find new KVM switch support Full-time ALL EDID/DDC.

Here are some suggestions, if you want to find a new KVM switch:

When select /upgrade new KVM switches for Windows 7 systems, the following important criteria should be included.

1. To avoid video resolution changing when selecting to/from Windows 7 systems,
make sure the KVM support Full-time EDID/DDC communication or called "Dynamic EDID mapping".

2. To avoid USB HID devices (keyboard, mouse or touch screen..etc) repeatedly mounting and dismounting when slecting to/from connected Windows 7 systems, make sure the KVM support USB DDM (Dynamic Devices Mapping).

3. Supporting of Special/functions keys of connected keyboard and mouse, make sure the USB DDM technology is on the spec.
