Solved My computers are sharing when I dont want them too

I've just noticed my PC and laptop are sharing files.
I can access all the files on my laptop from my PC and vice versa
(using the Network menu in windows explorer). Both use Windows 7.

I dont understand why this is as I have sharing turned off and Ive
Selected Share With -> Nobody on my User accounts.
Also left Home group and set advanced sharing settings to off.

Any ideas how to turn it off? Makes me worried somethings wrong with my computer security.

From my Laptop I am able to access files on my PC doing these steps:

So for example from my laptop I can access all the files in My Document on my PC. I can also do this the other way round from PC to laptop.

My issue is I have file sharping turned off on both machines so I don't understand what happening here.

Welcome to the forum russ85,

There are two options in the advanced network sharing settings.

One is Home of Work {Current Profile} the other is simply Public.

Are you sure you've turned of both of it? You could try and see that if it works.

Have you rebooted and seen if that made any difference?

In addition,you could try disabling homegroup.

I ran into the same (or similar) issue and fixed it as you see in my screen print.
It seems to me, "Sharing in Network" has it's own set of rules, and can be different than "Homegroup rules"...
I removed "Share this folder" in Network / Advanced Share for everything except the folders I do want shared.
I'm no Network/Security/Any expert ... but this has worked for me ...
You can see in my Screen Print, I have only one "SharedData" folder on each PC - that is the folder I always want shared ...

i.e.
In Post#1/Step1 Expand Scott-PC in the left hand pane and start from there ...
Can you turn off sharing for Users (or any folder) as I showed in my screen print ?

There may be a better way ... and i'd like to know, if I see this again ...

The trick is to uncheck the "Share this folder" from the correct location.

The correct location would be the main Users folder or C:\Users folder as is showing in the picture below. This folder controls access for all the other folders inside of the Users folder so disabling sharing here will prevent access to all of the Users folders.

This assumes that somebody hasn't over ridden the permissions on the main Users folder by adding access permissions to the security and sharing tabs of the main C: drive. You see, we have no way of knowing which permissions were adjusted beforehand so these settings need to be checked as well.

Although turning off sharing via the Advanced Sharing settings should prevent sharing from working as well, I can't imagine why this isn't working already....:sarc:

In fact with Windows 7, the lock showing on the C:\Users\Username folder should also prevent access to most of the Users folders unless there is still a Homegroup between these machines?

The only way this could happen is if someone added credentials for Everyone at the main drive or C: location. Unless there is a Homegroup set up that you might be unaware of.

Think Ive sorted it. Problem was the 'Users' folder in C drive was set to share and only way to stop it was to un-share from there. I dont get it cause folder 'Scott' was set to not share but you could still get into it.

Yes it needs to be done from the actual C: drive location rather than the network folder.

That's why I posted the picture showing the Local Disk C: Users properties...they more or less fixed this issue with Windows 8.

Glad the problem is sorted out.
