Those .reg files were made by Vishal Gupta.

You might see if merging these two NULL.reg files will correct those invalid entries :

I know *what* is causing the problem, I just wanted the OP to realize that a couple were FUBARd.

BTW, I used Nir Sofer's ZipInstaller: Install Windows applications from ZIP file to install it to Program Files (x86) on 64bit OSs and Program Files on 32bit OSs.

So, here is the .reg file to not only change the default association of .reg files from the default of having reg-editor install them to opening in RegPad - provides an extra layer of security for those without UAC on....

I have 2 versions - 32bit for folks running 32bit OSs ***and*** 64bit OSs who install RegPad to Program Files, and 64bit, for folks who install it to Program Files (X86).

Merging the RegPad entries 32bit.reg on my 32bit system removed the right click Edit and Merge options on the user account where I installed it...not good. It did correctly change the default association of .reg files from the default of having reg-editor install them to opening in RegPad. My other user accounts retained the right click Edit and Merge options along with the change of the default association of .reg files from the default of having reg-editor install them to opening in RegPad...good.

Cant explain this one.

Edit should become the default action when you double click the item, therefore it should be still in your context menu - I assume that you rebooted to make sure all is well?

Also, did you use ZipInstaller to install RegPad to the appropriate rectory?

If you open RegPad and look at the entries that you merged, it needs RegPad to be *installed* to Program Files. If you do not install it, you need to edit the paths to reflect where you have it extracted.

Personally, I'd use ZipInstaller b/c that puts it in the Program Files section, *and* it give it a nice little uninstaller.

Yes, I had extracted the program to another drive and that may be part of the problem. I'll copy the directory over to the default location and reboot to see if that corrects the issue.

Rebooted but still the same problem. Interesting that the problem only manifest itself in only the user account where I did the merge. The other user accounts had all changed properly.

While attempting to debug the problem I reset the default association of .reg to regedit. Now I am unable to change the default association for this file type within this user account. The other user accounts are all OK.

Hmmm. Sounds like a permission thing. Now when you try to merge the reg items it doesn't allow you to merge them?

Have you rebooted since resetting the .reg entries?

Have you performed any other tweaks using other .reg entries and such on this account already?

How about the other accounts?

I can still merge reg files since I reset my association back to regedit.exe but doing so disabled my ability to further change my association setting for reg files in this account only. All other accounts are OK.

I have performed other tweaks using other .reg entries on this account only. The loss of "Edit" and "Merge" option in the right click menu of this account only occured immediately after merging the RegPad entries 32bit.reg.

If I were to do this again I would have simply used the "open with" option and selected regpad as default.

Hopefully this is not detracting from the main focus of this thread and in particular finding a functioning tweak for having the right click search function in windows 7.

The problem with that method is that it actually makes it is secondary open with and the default action is still to merge it into the registry - this set of registry entries actually changes the default action from merging to *opening* and from Notepad to RegPad.

I am surprised that the context menu is disappearing - it works just fine on my machine....

unless there is *something else* for 64bit versus 32bit, such as the possible location of the reg keys themselves...

You can reset again and then go to those keys in the registry and see if they look anything like what I have put into those entries....

i did not see this in search, but was turned on too this progam the other day and some may find it useful - Moo0
Moo0 - 21 freeware and 2 shareware
free version available, and pro is around as well.
After using it a bit i kinda got frustrated about how far or levels i had to go just to delete a file, and a real f'n pain to move a file. This is not to say that some of you may like it a lot.

I found that what i really liked was the permanent delete option which came in useful when making room for more music downloads, i did not have to keep unloading recycle bin.
so I found this instead - called rightdelete 1.3

Not really, their kind of self explanatory but if you open them with a text editor you can see what registry entries they change and what they do.

knew it went on File in folders but had no idea it went on the right click on desktop as well
this turned out to be a lot better then i originally thought, thank you so very much x
if its not to much trouble can i ask you 3 more questions, how do you delete them if u don't want them anymore
got 6 nice ones working for me now that i love, most of them i don't know and if i don't like some of them
it would be nice to be able to take them off if at all possible or if its not what u expected
and is it possible to add programs that you use all the time and how
