So my father got some money lately and he knows that i wouldn't mine a new computer so he asked if i wanted to build or buy an already made one.. so i said i wanted to build one cos i wouldn't find a built one that is what i wanted and if i did would be probably cost way more then building it myself.

So out of his money i maybe getting around 1 to 1 and half grand to build computer a computer..

i could some ideas what i would like in this computer such has

  • Intel quad core
  • DVD burner
  • between 4 to 8 gig ram
  • a good video card (i don't do gaming)
  • 2 x 1tb internal hard drives (networked computers)
What would you build with 1 to 1 and half grand?

Links to parts would be nice also :)

You can get a 1TB drive for ~$15 more. I think that is well worth the extra cost.

I wouldnt get a 1tb for your system drive, you want a smaller/faster drive for your OS. I'd put the data on the 1tb drive.

Personally I go with SSD for my OS\Apps but unless you go with Raptors you won't see performance benefits of choosing a smaller drive. It seems like he is under a budget so I wouldn't think the raptors or really any faster drive would be an option.

Even allowing for your location, you have plenty of budget. Definitely quad core due to support for hyper-threading. Whatever CPU you choose, don't think you have to go for raw GHz - there is plenty of headroom available for OC, moreso on slower procs than faster ones.

Definitely get your RAM now. READ VERY CAREFULLY what the mobo specs say about max RAM. I can put 8GB on my P5B Deluxe, but only 533/667, not 800 or 1066, which is fully supported at 4GB.

Extremely large HDDs greatly increase the likelihood of being affected by bit error rate. I may be a bit cautious, but all of my archival drives are 500GB. Of course, I am always running out space.

Tell your Dad you love him.

Because motherboards are a standard size. That board is an ATX board. Which is 12.0x7.8 inches. As long as you get a case that supports a standard ATX board, you will be all set.

I just built a computer about 2 weeks ago using the Intel Q9550 processor which I got for $200. I want to say the Q9650 was about $320 at NewEgg...so your quote of $433 seems high.

For what it's worth, I got the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R mobo with the Q9550 (2.83) and just set the FSB speed to 367 in the BIOS and my Q9550 is now running at 3.2 and is cool and perfectly stable with the stock Intel cooler. Other than clock speeds, there is no difference between the Q9550 (2.83ghz) and the Q9650 (3.06hgz)
