sk0t0s pointed to the correct guide without explaining the need to "take ownership" over any stubborn file or folder that won't delete. The alternative to going through the various screens once you bring up the properties would be adding that option to the right click menu. Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista - How-To Geek

The first thing to check however is finding out if there are any sub folders under the main folder you are trying to delete. If any are present and are set for "read only" you will need to see each one of them removed by the same option before you can delete the main folder itself.

Want to know the one folder most have problems with? The Windows.old! You have to go in there and root out all sub folders with the read only box checked off in each sub folder's property screen and dump those before you can remove the main folder unless using a cleanup option in Windows.

One blog suggested renaming it from Windows.old to something like Windows.personal in order keep your important files safe in there to prevent any accidental deletion. Here I simply back files up over a few other drives!
