Hi everyone,

I've got some weird problem with my Win7 and my laptop fan. First, this is my laptop spec:

- Toshiba Satellite 09V
- Intel Dual-Core @ 1.5Ghz
- 3Gb Ram

The problem is before with XP, when my CPU get the 65oC, my fan turn on and turn very fast to evacuate the most air possible.

But with the new Win7, the fan turn but at a low speed, wathever the cpu temperature. Today, i've got 82oC and the fan don't turn faster to cool down the CPU.

In the performance setting in Win7, iV'e choose the "high performance", to get all the juice from my laptop (and in this setting, when I switch to battery, my laptop can run 2h30).

So, what can be the problem? Return to XP (oh please no...)

Thanks alot!

There's some discussions about x86 vs. x64 where x64 seems to run considerably hotter on laptops. You running x64 by any chance?

I'm sure you will not have to return to XP, having to return to that or Vista is a form of torture beyond comprehension. =)

I've seen this problem before with other laptops. Let me look into it a bit, have you made sure all your drivers are updated? (check Device Manager to see if any are having problems)

Could also be a physical cause such as dust or dirt plugging up the fan or the airflow somewhere in the cooling system. You could try opening the box up and looking for dust or dirt.

I hope this doesn't apply to you but my laptop started displaying somewhat similar symptoms just before the system board self destructed. It's in the shop now getting a new system board (under warranty fortunately).

If its still under warranty (the OP's laptop) and he opens it up, I believe warranty is voided.

There are fan control apps that you can change the profile in so it starts earlier and stops later. Just goggle fan control.

First, my fan is clean... because i've restore a old backup (with XP) and the fan run really faster...

Now i'm back with Win 7 and the speed of the fan get slow again... So it's really not the fan but the OS (i think)... but why?

@zigzag3143: Ok... I will try to get a google on that.

They're also some good cooling mats that would probably be a good investment for your lappy..

Sometimes a sacrifice if required. Windows 7 isn't perfect, but in most cases it does its job. I'm sure eventually there will be a patch for this problem (it does seem to be OS-related).

Well, you may want to consider downgrading back to XP then, though a cooling mat should be used on all laptops as they are notorious for poor ventilation, but the choice is up to you.. Good Luck!

If its still under warranty (the OP's laptop) and he opens it up, I believe warranty is voided.
Perhaps so in the case of the OP's machine. I wouldn't know about that. However that certainly is not true for Thinkpads (Lenovo). They have many CRU's (Customer Replaceable Units (or parts)) such as keyboard, memory, etc., that require opening the box up, which in the case of my Thinkpad means simply unscrewing 5 Phillips head screws from the back and then the keyboard and front bezel comes off and the interior of the laptop (including the cooling system) is exposed. Going that far is obviously OK, (at least in the case of a Lenovo), since they send out replacement keyboards, memory, wireless cards, etc. under warranty that require the customer opening the box to that point to remove and install such parts. Opening it up further than that, if done in a detectable manner, would probably void the warranty in the case of a Lenovo. Lenovo also expects the customer to be able to remove and reinstall the hard drive in the event of a failure under warranty. They provide videos on their site on exactly how to perform these simple repairs and they do not void the warranty. However, I certainly don't know the policy wrt the OPs box.

I know HP/Compaq laptops they really disapprove of doing anything to, that one guy threatened to void my warranty for installing Windows 7! (RTM!)

Actually, the original suggestion re looking for updated drivers is probably where the problem lies. Perhaps there is a system power driver that needs to be updated, or even just reinstalled after the installation of W7. I found that some of the proprietary drivers for my laptop needed to be reinstalled after installing W7. In some cases, there were updated versions for W7 that were created by the laptop manufacturer and these were not automatically installed by W7.

Hi again,

I've found by mistake the solution... weird solution but it's working.

Toshiba offer 2 kind of firmware, depend the OS you are running: XP or Vista. I don't know why but i've always flash my BIOS with the OS i'm running.

So, i've reinstall my XP copy and flash with my XP bios firmware, my fan was running fast when the temperature getting too hot (fan spin faster when it goes +70oC).

After, i've reinstall Win7 BUT keep the XP bios firmware... and you know what? The fan spin faster when the temperature goes, like XP, +70oC !!!

Just to be sure, i've re-install the original restore disc from Toshiba (with Vista):
- with the XP firmware & Vista: the fan don't spin faster.
- with the Vista firmware & Vista: the fan SPIN faster.

My conclusion is, the Vista bios firmware is working only FOR vista. If i'm running XP or Win7, I need the bios firmware for XP.

Weird, because Win7 is based on Vista and not XP, but the XP bios firmware is running better with Win7 OS.
