Solved my laptop hard drive appears as a removable device...

Now open the registry editor and navigate to:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci\Controller0\Channel0
(Using the channel # you found in Device Manager above)
If these keys (Controller0, or Channel0) do not exist you must create them.

ok they do not exist so how do i create them? sorry if this is pesky stuff i probably should know

Just navigate to the last existing key you are looking for (msahci) > right click on it > select NEW > select KEY > and type the name of the key.

Same process for DWORD. Then just fill in the blanks.

"How To Manually Upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 - Satellite A355D"

i appreciate all the help, and no i am checking it out as i type this, i saw that the other day but didnt even think that it could be a tool for troubleshooting, but im about to read through it

as i was reading through it just now, it is talking about doing an upgrade, but i didnt just upgrade, i totally formatted my hard drive and installed a fresh copy of windows 7, i have zero toshiba software on my laptop anymore except the necessary software to run the hardware that is installed in on this computer, which may not even be toshiba specific

I did not read it, just saw it and thought it might be helpful. Evidently not.

All in all, I'm not too impressed with Toshiba's level of support on their download site. That's the first time I didn't see a chipset driver on a download page. You might be helped by calling their tech support to see if they can point you to the drivers you need. Maybe they keep them hidden so novices don't get themselves into trouble. These laptop companies are doing some strange stuff with customized drivers these days that are giving us all a hard time.

will this also work for other components on a laptop. i just recently installed windows 7 ultimate on a friends computer and more than just his harddrive are displayed as ejectable devices. his cd/dvd/blu-ray drive is shown, along with his harddrive and two other items that im not sure what they were, one of them started with iEEE or something or another, i need to get more details on this and report back, but just wanted to know if this was possible for other things than just the harddrive

Yes, it should work. But I think you are going to have to find the registry keys for each device, not just the SAta controller as before.

I've never seen those devices listed as removable (IEEE1394 (firewire) and SD host controller). It leads me to believe that the proper Chipset driver has not been installed yet. There is one on the "Software & Drivers" page for that laptop. I would see about installing that first.

You may also want to install the "Driver-Storage" one too.
