My monitor is always having a flickering refresh rate

Bare with my newbyness to some things such as this, basicly on just about every game i play on, the refresh rates on my monitor is always showing on the screen, i can constantly see it flickering, its like when you put a bad camera phone looking at a TV and you see them awful lines going up/down on the screen,

i went onto a game called serious sam, an old school game i loved to play years ago and i saw a sub option on the video menu called Rendering options and gives me the option to "wait verticle re trace" in which i can turn it off or on, its default is off, so i put it on and it just about gets rid of the annoying refresh lines, i can see them a tiny bit, but that's if im trying to really focus on it which i aint bothered about, when i did that though it made the response to the game a bit laggy, like a split second delay before it would respond to my inputs.

apart from that game though, no other game i currently play gives me the option for the refresh rates and i cant stand seeing them, heres my dxdiags Display info:

my comp is a quad core CPU on Windows 7 Ultimate with 8000MB RAM, though its only a x32 so it only reads 4kmb and im currently on DirectX 11, if theres anything at all that anyone can let me know or any step by step thing on how to sort this out ill be damn happy, cheers.

Right click the desktop in an open area. Scroll down to Nvidia Control panel and left click it.

New window as in the picture below you will have 60Hz refresh rate. Yellow circle in picture below.
Change the refresh rate to 75Hz.
Close the window and give it a try.
You can always put it back to 60Hz. It won't hurt anything.

Mine is glitchy to me at 60Hz. To my wife the 60Hz looks fine.
I can see the twitch she can't.
Smooth as silk at 75Hz.

Hoppy their should be a test button to try and make sure it will accept the rate he can try first.

Yep I guess it only shows up when you also create a custom resolution. Thing is you really don't want to push an LCD to much above the standard refresh rate of 60 Hz. If we're talking about an LCD.

Hey, i attempted to change the refresh rate as you did, but oddly my only option is 60Hz, i did try the control panel and switching it from there from 60 to 59, but 59 didn't do diddly squat.

I see that yours says DVI display, whilst mine says VGA display, im gathering theres a difference in them but im not sure what, do i need to buy a DVI cable or something to give me the option of the 75?, i also tried putting it to 1440 x 900 as yours was on and still no luck as well.

edit: I've just tried the custom resolution and put it onto the 75Hz and its still there, all im hopeing is its something to do with this *VGA* display thing instead of a DVI or what not.

You don't want to change the resolution.

I didn't realize yours was set up VGA which is an analog signal.

I'm using the DVI digital signal.
Even with DVI it may only give you a 60Hz refresh rate. The digital signal may help reduce or remove the flicker even at 60Hz.
Might help if no other ideas come up from others.
It sure won't hurt to have the digital image especially on games.

That is the main time I notice a difference in the analog and digital signal is with games.

Okay as thefabe has pointed out yours is made to run at 60Hz so leave it there.

I would go DVI cable for the digital signal for gaming.

Ah well i suppose ill try buying a DVI cable, i did a google search on DVI cables, but some cables said "Use Dual Link DVI cables when higher resolutions are required (1920 x 1200 or above). "
would you mind may be even linking me to one that can be supported by my moniters resolution, even if its on ebay lol, its un-real how annoying the flickering is especially when your in a somewhat dark place then you see your screen getting spammed by the lines, thanks for the help

A DVI Dual Link cable should definitely help your problem. I got mine from eBay for $8.79 for a 6 FT. HD cable with ferrite core chokes on each end.

This is a top-quality cable, gold-plated contacts, etc. BE SURE your video card supports DVI-D Dual Link output though or you'll be wasting your money. It would be best to verify your 9800GT card does have that support.

I hope this helps. You will notice an improvement in signal quality even with the Single Link cable.

thanks a bunch for the links, is there an actual way to see if the graphics card supports the duel DVI cables such as checking the connection port on the graphics card it self?

Edit: i think i figured it out anyway, im guessing to verify it was just basicly if my resolution supported 1980 x 1200 and since mine was x1080, it wudnt support the duel so i just got a single, thanks again.

You need to go to the card maker's website and view the model you have, in the card's specifications section you should find the information you need.

I hope it works out for you. I have 1920 x 1080p resolution too. But it's on a Full HD LED monitor too. That may be a difference there.

I'm using a DVI-D Dual Link cable and noticed an improvement over the DVI-D Single Link cable I was previously using.
