My mouse keeps selecting things without a button being pressed

If you dont have setpoint installed or dont have the latest Driver, then get it from the link I posted above. and choose for OS "Windows 7" and "SetPoint 6.10" and then "SetPoint 32 bit"

Read all the notes and follow the instructions for installation.

Thanks I got the latest driver from logitech.

Now the setpoint 6.10 download let me select 32-bit or 64-bit.

All installed and rebooted this morning.

I began going through my email, responding to stuff and sure enough it did it again.

Just now on this post the text cursor has jumped to the mouse cursor twice already.

It works better if I keep the mouse cursor in the bottom right corner of the text box.

wow. that is wierd. i was hoping driver would fix. I would say after that, the only other thing I can think of is if any other programs are affecting it. Can you try something for me. Go into MSConfig by going to start, in search bar type in "msconfig" There should be a list of programs that start when the computer starts up. Disable all of the non-critical or self-installed programs. Restart and see if it still does it.

IF this fixes it, then you can re-enable the programs one by one restarting after each one till you see the problem again. then we can see what program is causing it.

Yes thank you.

I am familiar with msconfig and that process.

I was really hoping that this was some hidden feature of version7.

Thanks anyway. :)

Here is what I have done.

As a test protocol:
I open notepad and type a few lines of junk leaving the text cursor at the bottom line, and the mouse cursor at the top right corner. Then I go outside and do some chores [I live on a farm and have lots of stuff to do]. Then when I come back in, I check to see if the text cursor is still at the bottom or if it has moved to the top right.

In MSconfig I disabled every startup app, rebooted and tried my little test. It failed.

Then using MSconfig I reenabled all startup apps, and went over to the services. I disabled every service that was not Microsoft, rebooted and I tried my test. It failed.

Then using MSconfig I reenabled all services and I disabled the first page listing of microsoft services, rebooted and I tried my test. It worked.

The microsoft services that I disabled were:
bluetooth support,
certificate propaganda,
microsoft .NET framework,
Com+ sys app,
Crypto,
disk defrag,
DHCP Client,
DNS client,
wired autoconfig,
diagnostic policy,
and dritek WMI.

Looking at these I assume the most likely offender to be bluetooth or wired autoconfig. So I have disabled both of them and re-enabled the rest.

So It is working correctly now? Was it indeed the bluetooth? or wired autoconfig?

Yes.

Leaving bluetooth and wired-autoconfig disabled the problem has gone away.

I have not gone back to figure out which is the culprit.

I think that I am happy just to leave both disabled. [for now]

There is a site called: 'The Elder Geek' that I used as a reference for which services could or should be disabled under WinXP, to make XP run good.

Is there a comprehensive list of Win7 services with recommendations of which services are best left disabled?

I realized that it is due to not being able to shut off my mouse pad on my laptop. I keep seeing tapping, but apparently my computer does not have that. I am using Windows 7 Professional Edition. I have looked all over for it and I have tried to disable it, but it only disables my external mouse. I really like Windows 7 on my PC, but on my laptop it is becoming such a huge headache. I hope to get this fixed eventually. On Vista they had an icon by the clock to click on to turn it off when the mouse was plugged in, but now they do not appear to have that on mine. Very frustrating.

Actually after a few days the problem came back.

I have since swapped out mice, which did not help.

And I swapped out keyboards, which did not help.

So it is not related to a peripheral device and it does not seem to be software.

Oh and I deleted each of the USB drivers, and Win7 did it's automatic re-installs.

I have now tried placing tissue and cardboard on the touchpad before closing the laptop. To see if maybe it was air currents causing the mouse to click things.

It did not help.

hey, i'm wondering if you ever get this problem fixed? 'cause i have the exact same problem but it only happened after I install win 7 on my computer about a month ago. I had vista which came with the laptop and everything was working just fine. I started to think if this is a problem with the os.
btw, i'm used to an external mouse but the problem exist even if I unplug the mouse and use the touch pad.
so if you have any good idea for solving this problem, could you let me know? thanks a million.

No.

It still does it.

A new mouse, a new keyboard, and a shield over the touchpad later; it still does it.

Fixed my dell

I had the same problem with my laptop connected to an external mouse. I
fixed it by going into personalize-change mouse pointers-dell touchpad-device
select and then disable touchpad when external mouse is connected. I assume
there is a similar setting for all laptops.

Mouse Cursor Makes file Selection without Clicking

It is in "FOLDER OPTIONS" in Windows 7. Notice the option for SINGLE CLICK also states "point to select".
Change back to "DOUBLE CLICK" and it states "single click to select".

I don't know if anyone is still having problems. I found Control panel - Mouse - Mouse properties - Pointers -
I then replaced Aero with 'None' from dropdown menu
Apply - OK
I also renamed None.
Might have worked fingers crossed
