my music folder

I have searched and searched and I can not find the reason for the "my music" folder in win7. I have sucessfully added songs to the music folder on my start menue and I have successfully added songs (folders) from my external drive to my library. But I dont know when or why or how to put music in the "my music" folder. I guess that if I find that out - the My Pictures folder will work the same way . Thanks in advanced . Jerry

It's basically just a location. If you look it should be at C:\Users\user name

If you navigate there then you will be able to add music there. There's that folder and then there's your public folder at C:\Users\Public

thanks for the comeback . I read all of that and I still cant get in my mind why I need "MY MUSIC" when I have access to all my music in my library.

Well, the idea of a library is to bring all of the same file types to one centralized location.

I think the idea of public and personal folders has been around for a while, but with Windows 7, and the library feature, it brings all your music to one place.

I hope that has cleared things up. Let me know if I can clarify further

Wow! Thanks for your patients. I want to try this again. I have a clean install of Win 7 with only the sample pictures in the pictures folder, and the sample music in the music folder. Now I also have a new My Book external drive. What I did was drag and drop 2 of the sample pictures (penquins and tulips) to the D:/ drive. I also drag and drop 1 sample music (sleep away) to the D:/. Now I put 3 videos that I made myself from my camcorder on the D:/ drive. I labeled them approperly Pictures, Music, videos. After navigating to the folders on my D:/ drive and adding them to my library, I have access to all of my Media in one place. (library). When I click start /username/ Pictures, I see all of my pictures, simerly Music and simerly video's. Now is the big BUT--- when I click start/username/ MY MUSIC , that folder is empty, simerly MY PICTURES. Should I just go ahead and get another song from somewhere and stick it in MY MUSIC just to have something in there?

Basically what you have done is put all of your media on the external hard drive right?

If that is the case (and if I'm understanding correctly) then this is what you have done:

You put your media on an external hard drive and have no media on your computer.
You have told your library to look for media in the external hard drive (thus why you see it in libraries)
Therefore, the reason you see no media in username\my<folder> is because there isn't any there, it's all on your external hard drive.
The reason you see your media in username\<folder> is because that is the libraries feature that has been directed to your external hard drive.

Now, to answer your question about the my<folder> area. You do not have to add media there as long as you understand that the only time you can access your media is when you have your external hard drive connected. If you want to access any media when your external HD is not connected then you would have to transfer it to username\my<folder>

not exactly right. I left 2 sample music on my C:/ drive and 6 sample pictures on my c:/drive (chrys-desert-hydan-jellyfish-koa-lighthouse) and I see all of the above mentioned in my libray.

Window 7 came with 3 sample music and 8 sample pictures. I just put 1 music and 2 pictures from the samples to the d:/ Jerry

I reread the part about that if I wanted to access any music from my d:/ drive (without it attached to the computer) , I would have to transfer some of the songs to MY MUSIC before removing the d:/ drive. That would just be putting more music back on my c:/ drive. It looks like then that we are just using MY MUSIC as temporary storage? Is that correct ? Jerry

You don't have to use My Music at all.

You don't have to use libraries at all.

Both are entirely optional. If something else makes better sense to you, then go with your preferred method.

My Music is the default location for your music if you use WMP 12 and play music you either have to have your external drive hooked up so the so media player can find the file or you have to have the file in My Music so it can find it if your external is NOT hooked up. Hope this helps

Ten years ago, you didn't see that default folder structure in Windows. None of this "My" stuff.

The world remained on its axis.

I can only guess that MS developers felt that you needed your hand held and could not be trusted with your own judgment.

It's always seemed cuckoo to me. Any user can make any folder structure they want, so why the nudging to "My"...............................?

You can move that Music Folder, or any User Folders for that matter, to another drive and place all your Media in it as well.

Or, move all your Media to the folders default location.

In the end, its all personal preference how you want to do it.

So long as you added whatever location to the library, you will have easy access to it through them.
WMP & Photo Viewer will also import everything in your library to its own library as well, regardless of its physical location.
