My new Graphics Card, what should it be?

Hey guys,

So, my previous NViDiA 9500GT 1GB made its way to heaven. And now, I'm looking for a new one to buy.

My Motherboard:

Intel Classic Series
DG43NB

*For the Intel Core 2 Quad and Intel Core 2 Duo Processors

As my motherboard only supports up till DDR2 Rams, I have to buy a graphics card which is for that purpose only. Not a GDDR3-GDDR5 but a DDR2 supporting graphics card.

My Specs:

bCTiL.png

Currently I'm looking into these:

NViDiA GT 220
ATI AMD RADEON HD 5770
ATI AMD RADEON HD 6770

The problem is that only ATI AMD RADEON HD 5770 512mb supports DDR2 only but ATI AMD RADEON HD 5770 1gb supports GDDR3.

So, how will that work? Also is the fact that a DDR2 limited Motherboard has compatibility issues with GDDR3 Graphics Card true? Or can one buy a GDDR3 Graphics Card for a DDR2 limited Motherboard?

Thanks in advance for your helpful replies :)

Hi, you motherboard ram ddr2 has nothing to do with graphics.
a gddr3 or gddr5 graphics card will work fine.

Yep - two completely separate things.

The 5770 and 6770 are essentially identical, with the 6770 having a couple of updated features on them. Other than that spec-wise (core and memory speed) they are the same, so whichever is cheaper.

That said either one will smack the GT 220 silly, so if those are your choices then the AMD card definitely.

Thanks for your reply stormy13 :)

One last question: on my specs, will 6770 & GTX 460 have a difference? The price is a lot different. I just wanted to know if the performance will be. My screen is 21" CRT.

The GTX 460 is a fair bit faster than the HD 5770/6770. Don't think I would go as far as the difference between the GT 220 and the 5770/6770. Also don't think you'll find one for $120 as they are still going for between $160-170 to over $200 at Newegg,

Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Video Cards & Video Devices, Desktop Graphics / Video Cards, NVIDIA, GeForce GTX 400 series

it will also require a bit more of a power supply than the 5770. Both the GTX 460 and 5770/6770 will require a connection to the power supply (2x6 pin PCI-E for the 460, and 1x6 pin for the 5770), where the much weaker GT 220 doesn't.

Thanks again stormy for the reply :)

Kick GT 220 out of the box.

Currently, I'm thinking about only 6770 & GTX 460. Which one should it be for my rig? And ya, the Power supply is a "go" for me :D

The 460 is a pretty good card for cheap, but I would do a more general google for "ATI 6770 vs GTX 460" and the like :)
