The title explains the problem. I can't find anything that would set this off. Everything else seems normal. It's been doing this all morning. Probably, if I reboot, it'll stop - but I want to find the source of the 'bing.' How can I trace it down?:sarc:

Not the typical tick, but may be the HD. Go to the website of your HD mfg and give the hd a test.

This is a guess but, it could be the volume control? That makes a bing... (Is this sound coming from your speakers, or from the computer itself?)

The sound is from the speakers and continues to 'bing' every five minutes exactly. There is no message. Is there some other way to find out what happened at that exact time? There must be a log somewhere. It's 'binging' for a reason and I'd like to know why.

The only thing that comes to mind is to open task manager (ctrl+shift+esc), and go to the processes tap. Press "show processes from all users", and click yes on the UAC prompt. Set it to show the processes using the most CPU percentage at the top. See if one jumps up to the top for a second when the "bing" happens.

Found the culprit. It was in my email client. It was trying to connect to hotmail every five minutes and Hotmail doesn't allow that. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.
