Buy a new laptop. You don't have enough memory, the gpu is obsolete and 4200RPM hard drives are too slow to run 7 indexing.

I would wait until you can get some new hardware. You could look at getting retail Windows so you can use it until you get new hardware then take Windows with you to the new machine.....just a thought (an expensive thought)

You can run Windows 7 even at 512MB of RAM. There is a thread about running 7 on old machines...someone had theirs on a Pentium II!!!!!

It won't be the fastest experience but it will be usable none the less

Would it be cheaper to build a laptop or just buy one? Just starting in the IT field have a basic understanding of the stuff currently working on getting Microsoft Certs. Would love to have the knowledge on these OS's.

Unless you are a hardware specialist...the average person can't build a laptop

You can buy an off-brand one (such as one from IBUYPOWER) that is normally significantly cheaper than name-brand

I had a friend that had Windows 7 Beta running on a p3 with 512mb ram, ran better than I thought it would be, quite surprising what they have done with 7 ^.^

I would wait to have a better computer too though, and since you have it free, if you can hold on till you get another computer, keep it :).

It's better to buy the laptop as building laptops ourselves is harder than building a desktop.

Thanks for letting me know Ill check the site out and start saving for a new one. I also get a discount at Dell from school as well. So I will look into that as well. Until then looks like im going to be stuck with XP for a little longer.

You should be fine. My girlfriend has a Compaq Presario V5101US with the same specs, actually a Sempron processor and the Windows 7 RC worked perfectly. Graphics were fine, the Xpress 200M to me is a decent laptop card . I had to upgrade the memory, but it is easy. Order some memory from Newegg and you are in the clear. I have vista running on 768MB of memory so seven should be able to run on less...not perfect but obtainable.
