 It was a GeForce 8600GT may it RIP as it was a very nice card.

Anyways, when i took it out to see what was wrong, I noticed 3 of the bigger capacitors were burst. The tops were open and brown stuff was slightly commin out of one. Never a good sign : / Its strange though, the past like month or so, I noticed a LOUD popping noise, NO idea where it was commin from like a loud ballon pop. I've heard three total pops and I can guess it was these things bursting after all.

So my question to you is, why would this happen? Was it age goin on like 2 maybe 3 years? Maybe a PSU issue? Driver issue?

When i buy my new card I dont want this same thing happening, also, i like to know why things happen out of curiosity. If anyone has an idea please share :)

Lastly my new card is going to be a radeon 4870 or 50, single. To go with the new monitor I just bought before this happened.

If i were to guess, It would seem like your brand of the 8600GT had been using inferior components.
Can you supply more details about your video card?

Sure, foremost, the brand in question was XFX, PCI express, 256 MB of DDR3 RAM. I hadnt OCed it at all. I still have the box and it says 540MHz (card says on it too, these specs).

I second that entirely. + old type cheap ass capacitors.

You could replace them with new capacitors, and the card will work again.

150$-200$ish, i was thinkin radeon for a change since they have GDDR5 memory and GeForce is a little more expensive.

I can get a 4870 1GB 750 clock speed for 150ish.

I have a question, would it be worth the extra 50$ for the 4890?

And whats this about the 5000 series i hear, would that give these cards a decent price drop?

im on my dads laptop which is a pain and getting hot so im gonna log i'll look more tomarrow

I would suggest either the BFG GeForce GTX 275 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

or the BFG GeForce GTX 260 OCX MAXCORE 55 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

Also check out Benchmarks here ATI Radeon HD 4890 vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 275 - TechSpot

A couple other reasons to go with Nvidia are:
1. Nvidia are pulling in many game developers to use their PhysX and other technologies.
2. Nvidia has better driver support than ATI.

I think you have a good point about ATI's next graphics card having an effect on prices.
You should see price drops from both nvidia and ati.

also......see if you can stick your PSU on a ''multimeter'', make sure the voltages are up to spec & not fluctuating wildly on the 12v rail..

if your PSU is on its way out, it has a funny way of taking out other components as it leaves....lol :p

what is your PSU..?? (make / model)
