My Win7 is booting too fast (and I have a funny problem with this)

After upgrade my laptop with a new SSD drive, my windows 7 is booting so fast, i have a little funny but weird problem: mouse/keyboard and external drive!

When my Win7 is booting and my desktop appear, it's so fast that my usb mouse/keyboard (Logitech) and external drive take a while(10-15 seconds) before loading and working. It's very like a driver sequence issue, the usb driver is not loading at the right time.

I've not clone my HDD to my SDD, but a complete re-installation. I'm very happy with my SSD, it's like day and night, but how can I load the USB driver a little bit faster or before something else like printer driver (example)... load my usb mouse and usn drive is more important than printer (example).

Hi there.

Never heard that one before -- Booting TOO FAST !!!! -- that must be a first.

Try looking in the BIOS -- switch OFF USB legacy mode if it exists. Also if your mouse / keyboard really OLD then it might be worth changing them -- it's possible they have a non standard USB driver in which case the OS would have to load the drivers after boot. Most decent Mice / keyboards have basic USB drivers in the BIOS -- otherwise you wouldn't be able to alter the BIOS settings with your USB keyboard.

Another solution is to remove any Mice drivers and then re-boot. If you have special function mice the functions can always start AFTER boot so you shouldn't see any delay.

My experience in this type of stuff is that it's NOT the keyboard or mice but actually the VIDEO drivers and Touchpad (if using a laptop). Try updating touchpad (if laptop) and installing the latest VIDEO and CHIPSET drivers.

External drives will take a while since the system reads / checks them - which if large devices can take a little while. External HDD's are very slow compared to SSD's - even USB 3 devices. IMO it's always better to plug these in Manually AFTER the machine has booted if you can. If these are POWERED external drives only switch the power on AFTER your machine has booted.

Nope... nothing in my BIOS for usb legacy (or any deviation).... try to uninstall, reboot... nothing. My mouse and keyboard are 1 year old (logitech unifying).

It's not a big problem because my laptop is always open... but it's a funny thing because no problem with my HDD and with my SDD I have this!

I have a suggestion. Look in the bios for the words USB partial initialization. If you see that as an option, choose Full initialization instead. This should solve the issue. Every bios is different, but look everywhere in the bios for that option. Asus motherboards typically have this setting and I found by changing to full initialization this solves a lot of USB issues.

Thanks for the help... but i've not found anything like that in my BIOS (Dell Laptop). But i've take few picture of my BIOS, so you can help me a little bit more!

Fast boot under post behavior. Tell it to do a full boot or similar wording vs quick boot

not working.... I think is for when I turn on my laptop... he check or not the memory, etc, to boot faster (so bypass some self test).

Hmmm...Sorry about that..

The Reason I had you do that is I have seen some bios that have that setting there.

What about external usb ports under onboard devices?

What settings do you see there?

Do you have all the latest USB drivers?

A utility I recommend going to is here:

Intel® Driver Update Utility

See if intel after it scans your system finds any updates. I have before found all kinds of important updates there before, including usb devices driver update. Its worth a look. Its just a quick little install of a plugin and that's all there is to it.

For your external Hard drive I recommenced searching the brand on google and look for support or downloads. Find your model and download the driver for it. If its a new one, it will update it. If its not, it will just replace the one on the system. No biggie.

Ok... after few test, i've got the reason of this, but not the solution.

First, the reason: My external hard drive (Western Digital MyBook 2Tb). When I turn off the drive and I reboot, when Windows display the desktop, my mouse is working right away. If I reboot with the external drive at on, it take a while to get my mouse to work after the display of the desktop.

The problem I have is, i've buy a SSD and all my cache/temp folder/file for Windows and Firefox are move on the external drive. So if I reboot with the drive at "off", I got a message when i'm back in Windows; my mouse is working but windows cannot find the cache/temp drive (Y : \).

I will contact Western Digital about this problem... and for information, my external drive and the Logitech dongle are in the USB port from the Laptop, not in a external hub.

Solved

I have encountered the same problem today after doing some boot speed-up optimizations, and I found the following solution:

- Run regedit.exe
- Navigate to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\services\usbhub
- Change the Start mode from 3 (manual) to 2 (automatic).

This makes the USB drivers load earlier - early enough to have my USB mouse up and ready when the desktop appears. (I use Auto-Logon. Did not test if the mouse will already be available on the login screen, but I guess so.

By the way, for me this also solved another (common) problem: Printer spooler error messages regarding event ID 315 - something like "the printer XXX cannot be shared" - no longer appears in the event log for USB printers.
