Hi there

I am having a consistent problem with W7. Everytime I boot into Windows, it freezes usually within 30 secs, sometimes as its logging in. But it will never go further than 1 minute without freezing. If I boot into safe mode, its fine, which would suggest software/driver issues. But, this is a dual boot machine (XP Pro) and this is now happening when I boot into XP.

I have attached a list of events that happen around the time of the freeze, one minidump file that was generated, and a list of my services, in a zipfile, along with a list of drivers from the driverquery command.

I have disconnected all unnecessary hardware (sound card, NIC, DVD-RW, extra hard drives and tried booting it each time, but no joy. I have updated my graphics card drivers, NIC drivers, Soundcard drivers, Motherboard drivers and I've also flashed the NIOS to the latest version I could get. I have also attached a system info file.

I have read extensively on the net regarding this problem and the various Event ID error codes. But really feel that I need somebody who is very well versed in deciphering the minidump and event logs to help me trace the root cause of this problem. I have also run memtest and it had 4 clear passes. I've run sfc /scannow and that came back ok.

Thanks for the prompt reply Lemur. I forgot to mention that this install of W7 has been runnng fine for around a month, and since last Friday, this has started happening. Didn't actually get a BSOD, it just literally froze, but there was one minidump file, that it produced (attached to the 1st post). Am trying selective startup now, so will report back on that shortly

Hi Lemur

It worked fine for a while with Diagnostic Startup, it worked for about 5 mins before freezing. But I uninstalled some stuff and I can't get on the net in safe mode now. Uninstalled net framework and a couple of other bits. I am that close to wiping it and reinstalling, I tell thee.

Tried selective startup, but it froze almost straight away again. Do any of the events point to anything specific?

hey guys,

my computer has been doing the same thing. Probably around the last 2 weeks when I shut down my computer completely and then turn it on it doesn't respond when I log on to windows, so I have to restart it everytime for it to work and I have no idea what the problem is. I thought it might be fixed with the update I just got but it wasnt. It's annoying because now I always have to put my computer into sleep mode because if I turn it off itll just not respond on startup.

hopefully someone can figure out this problem

thanks

Hi Lemur

Thanks for your help, I've found the problem now. It was the video card, got a new one today and it seems fine! Any further problems and I'll post back.

Windows 7 hang ups...

I've had the same problems with log on screens freezing forever with Windows 7 and Dell. No one seems to know what the cause is BUT.... After I retrieved my puter from storage for about a year, the battery CMOS batt died, I replaced it, updated Mcafee blah blah blah, and still continued to hang up the same way it was before I put in storage! Now....on that note. I read on another forum to start reseating all the cards. I had to do it anyway because I replaced the CMOS batt. In a strange twist of fate, the very moment I reseated the card where the monitor cable plugs into, everything worked! It no longer freezes on log in screen or start up screen. I rebooted about a dozen times just to make sure and still everything works great. Hope this helps, because I've been trying to remedy this damn problem for over a year.
