After following the posting instructions in the link kindly provided by torchwood you can read what my experience was with the same problem. Windows Update "checking for updates" with no results.

The computer I'm talking about is a refurbished Dell Latitude E6420 Win7 Pro (I wanted to get another device to take advantage of the free W10 upgrade, I have a desktop W10 Home, a laptop W10 Pro, and now this one will have W10 Pro)

Anyway when it came on Tue. I powered it up and found it had IE8  upgrade to IE11, did some other downloads and then tried to update and nothing happened. Tried numerous times, same thing, stuck on checking for updates, got disgusted and just left it on all night last night checking for updates. This morning after 14 or 15 hours I checked it, and it had 250 updates, 1.33G. Took a couple hours total to install them/reboot and recheck, but now it's completely updated. I have an 18M connection, download was 5 minutes or so, install was what took all the time.

Just wanted to say before trying any of the many idea's posted, let it go for at least 20 hours of checking for updates. I was going to let mine go for as long as it took, or next weekend, whichever came first, at that time I was going to upgrade to W10 Pro whether 7 updated or not. IMO it's better to have a completely updated box before moving to W10.
