Solved Mysterious Icons Partially Covering Up Thumbnails

I recently discovered that my thumbnails of photos, files, etc. are being overwritten by icons. This is not the user friendly icon that you can attached to thumbnails to show its type. Rather, it covers from 1/3 to 1/2 of the thumbnail, making the thumbnails nearly useless. Please the snip below:

Capture.JPG

I have tried:
- Selecting & deselecting the "Display the icon on thumbnails" option at "Folder Options / View /"
- Using Disk Cleanup to remove the existing thumbnail files
- Trying different photo viewers
- Deleted a variety of photo organizing software that I never used (such as came with my Cannon) in case I accidently triggered it.

It only occurs with photos in my C: and E: drives. C: is a SSD drive and I normally put only programs there. E: is a normal hard drive where all my data goes. I do not see the annoying icons when I copy photos from E: and paste them into my backup drive H: or onto a thumb drive.

Also, it is not always the same icon - see example below:

2nd example.JPG

I have gone through the images at Google, but all I see are problems with full icons or full thumbnails, not the mutant-large-icons-on-top-of-thumbnails that I'm getting. Has anyone seen something like this before?

Thanks,

- Ron

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Those are online backup indicators usually coming from Norton or similar services.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Yes, I just recently did a Norton backup! It was to my H: drive, Is there some way to get rid of the icons?

Once I knew it was Norton, I did a mini-backup with Norton of just a few files. That caused Norton to let go (i.e. stop marking with icons) the vast majority of my files. Got all my thumbnails back!

I am now, however, looking a good backup program that does not markup my thumbnails - any suggestions?

Thanks again for the help.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. It is Norton backup identifier icon, may I know which Norton product are you running?

ThrashZone: Thanks for the JPG! It made very clear what I was looking for. Also, Macrium looks interesting - it may be a lot faster for large backups.

NortonSupport: I am using the latest version of Norton 360 - I'm happy with it so far (except for the large icons, of course). Norton may want to consider having the icons in a 'default-off' position or put a note somewhere in the backup instructions describing the icons and their purpose.

To help any other person bothered by large icons and who is using Norton 360 for backup, please see the JPG below to see the route to click off the icons:
