NAS drive enclosure

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a good cheap NAS drive enclosure that supports RAID 10, but I'm having a hard time trying to find one that is. I found some, but they only support RAID 0, 1, and 5.

I'm wanting to plug it into the router so that my desktop and WHS server can use it for storage with a few SATA drives in RAID 10 for speed and data protection.

Do you have any recommendations?

I question the benefit of RAID 10 in this scenario. If this is going to be a networked device for storage....would the speed of your network actually be able to saturate the performance that you would get out of a RAID 5 setup??? I don't think that the extra speed gained from going from RAID 5 to RAID 10 in this instance would be noticeable...plus you will have more drive space with RAID 5 as your RAID 10 is only going to give you 50% overall.

I know of a few, but they are far from cheap. from 449 euro's, without disks. :shock:

Thank you Parks. That and a RAID 5 NAS being easier to find than 10 just may swing my decision.

Ok, I gave up on the NAS since they were to high. I decided on a USB/eSATA RAID box instead. Here are two that I have found that seem to be a good price with good reviews below.

What are your opinions on them, any personal experience using them, or other recommendations??

I would choose the MediaSonic for the larger, and presumably somewhat quieter, fan.

I have 2 AddTronics 4-in-3 bays and really like the hotswap. That is the only shortcoming I see on these two housings.

The onboard port expanders are a nice touch.

Also, do not overlook the 2TB limit. Which is fine. I would not use drives larger than 500GB in a RAID5.

They both seem very nice.

I lean toward the Mediasonic.

It has Firewire 400 and 800, and some extra usb ports,
which probably you don't need but could always prove handy.

Main reason would be the fact it has a power adapter instead of a PSU inside the box.
This means the heat of the power source is kept outside the box.

Also if the power adapter fails, it's easier to replace than a non standard PSU.
(might be a very expensive item in after sales.)

For the rest there isn't much in between them.

Good catch Squonksc - for the power supply alone I would choose the MediaSonic. Extends the life of the drives.

I'm definitely leaning towards Mediasonic unless someone posts one better, or I find one better.

Thanks for the reminder on the 2 TB limit for WHS Antman. For Windows 7, I would have just used a GPT, but WHS does not support that.

Pitty though it doesn't work for scanners.
I would love to put my multifunctional printer in the network,
but only the printer works.

I found one company that has a software solution for it,
but at twice the price of my printer.

Since it will still be handicapped at USB 2.0 speeds, it wouldn't benefit me. I was originally hoping for a cheap NAS box to use 1GB LAN for a faster connection as a workaround to the server's USB connection.

To bad they do not have a direct eSATA to NAS adapter.

Well, I found a good open box special on Newegg for this one below and ordered and received it.

The special was that it was the silver model in the box and not the black model stated on the box even. LOL

I have it setup in JBOD with two 1.5 TB 5400RPM drives to the ASRock server with WHS installed. It worked perfectly the first time through without a problem. Since it works so well, I'm not worried enough about the color to go through exchanging it.
