Posted this in the networking forum a week or so back without success.....so trying again here!

I have a weird problem that has me completely baffled. I have a WD MyBook NAS drive that appears to work perfectly in that I can open it in Windows Explorer and access all the files it contains. However, it is invisible in the file / open dialog of all MS Office applications - and similarly, if I try to point iTunes to the iTunes Media folder that the drive contains, it does not appear among the network resources there, either.

Today, I succeeded in pointing iTunes at the drive by inputting the path instead (it is \\192.168.1.6) and my library updated - which was promising. But when I tried to play a song, it said that the file could not be located. Tried to locate it, and once again, iTunes could not see the device.

I have another laptop (running Windows 10) which doesn't have the problem - which would perhaps indicate that there is nothing wrong with the way in which the drive is configured and that instead, there is some setting on the Windows 7 box which is preventing programs from accessing the drive in the normal way.

Anyone have any thoughts? Here are the answers to the questions in your pinned post (and I have also attached an ipconfig report)

1. Is this a wired or wireless connection issue?
Both, I believe

2. Who is your Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
Virgin Media

3. What type of Broadband connection are you using?
Cable

4. What is the exact Make and Model of your Modem, Router or Modem/Router Combo
Netgear R8000

5. What is the Name of the Anti-Virus, Security or Firewall Software installed from the problematic computer
Trend Micro OfficeScan 11

As it is an external network drive you must assign a letter to it.
Open Exploree, right click on Network - Map network drive.
Once you have a drive letter to it, serch for it under your application.

Thanks for this. The odd thing is that I could swear that I had tried this and it made no difference....but on trying it again just now, it worked just fine. Very odd. Thanks again!
