I watched the full announcement live. It wasn't a full announcement of alien life. What they found is a microbe in a lake in California that can substitute phosphorus for arsenic in it's DNA molecules. This shows there's more to life than we know it as it shows that life can be different and how different environments could support life.
That hardly is Earth-Shattering. They build us up for a big letdown. -- I am still upset about Pluto being kicked out of the Solar System.
