The rap on the space station has always been that it was built primarily to give the space shuttle somewhere to go. Now, with the shuttle being retired at the end of 2010, the station is on the spot. U.S. astronauts will be able to reach the station only by getting rides on Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft.

I guess they're also doing away with US space shuttles too. pity, i wanted to hang out in the void one day, 3 million USD gets you into space for a week .

I hope they televise this in 2016, when that would be comet misses the ocean and levels a a Kinko's. (I'm sure they'll evacuate it beforehand)

Yeah, well the shuttle is old tech now. The problem is that we have nothing to replace it......... Oops.

Also, why would the station be scrapped just because we didn't want it? INTERNATIONAL Space Station anyone?

i think the US did most of the bankrolling, my guess is no one else wanted to foot the bill. NASA is government funded (pretty sure), and with the US's current economical state (it sucks), i think it's a wise choice for the 'short run', but like you mentioned Lordbob, there's no replacement for the shuttle (that the 'public' knows of). it's going to kill all the fun of studying moon rocks for a while.

They did indeed shell out most of the cost. A lot of countries got in on it, then backed out at the price shot about 1000x higher than expected. We took the bill on to keep it going.

They are retiring the shuttles in 2010 and working on the Orion spacecraft (Info Here) but that will only become available around 2015 (if things go as scheduled).

$100 billion... a lot of money. But is it really necessary? Especially in this crisis..... :S

They already planning the next placement for the shuttle in 2015-2020.
