i have at&t/frontier uverse and their internet, and long time ago provided me with a 2wire i38HG gateway that has 4 lan ports, then the rj-11 jack that i have cat3 going to their junk on the outside of my house.

the 100mbps of this i38HG in my office has got to go.

I hate calling frontier so much, i would rather just newegg or ebay a replacement that gives me gigabit lan.
anyone know what i can replace it with so that everything still works?
or do i have to get it from frontier?

this would be for gigabit on the 4 lan ports... i have 2 or more computers in my office and when i want to move a 50+ GB worth of files/data between them it takes too long.

You will still have to call Frontier to activate the new modem since it's mac address will be different than the 2-Wire one you currently have, so why not call them now and see if they can do something for you. Might save you some money.

this would be for gigabit on the 4 lan ports... i have 2 or more computers in my office and when i want to move a 50+ GB worth of files/data between them it takes too long.

Just get a small multiport gigabit switch like this:
Amazon.com: TP-LINK TL-SG105 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch, 10/100/1000 Mbps,IEEE 802.1p QoS: Computers & Accessories
and plug all your devices into it, including a cable to your ISP-provided switch.

Then you will have a gigabit internal network, and the same 100Mb port out to the external world.

And you don't have to talk to your ISP at all...

i had an old network switch laying around that was gigabit,
didn't want another piece of hardware on the desk but that's what i decided to use.
all my computers are connected to the gigabit switch, and one port from the switch is connected to one of the four ports on the i38hg gateway. good enough.

you obviously don't have frontier, i had to call to get a replacement hpna splitter for the tv, had to hang up and re-call hoping to get something with more than half a brain. they won't know what gigabit is.

i came across a few web posts that said there was no known 2wire gateway/router or anything for dsl/uverse internet that ever had more than 100mbps for the 4 ports on that router.... and that the only option was to do what i did for higher than 100mbps on the lan.
