hi i need a new gadget for monitoring how much data ive downloaded with maybe in the last week/month/overall if it is possible or if one allready existed?
The reason for this is a friend or mine had his line capped so he rang thru to his ISP kicking off and wanting to know why. well it turned out he had breached fair usage right by downloading 200GB last month 160GB month befor and so on! so maybe a gadget like this could help downloaders keep an eye on how much in total they are downloading!

Do they monitor network traffic (IE if I stream to my PS3) or do they give actual internet dl/ul activity?

reason I ask is I used to have a similar tool when I had a 40gb CAP/month, and had it set to alarm at 35gb, but because it recorded network traffic, by the end of the first week I had hit my limit.

Only works for the PC it is setup on, for example, I have:

Main PC wired - Net Moniter installed and working
2 x XP laptops wireless
1 x Ubuntu Desktop wireless
1 x ubuntu netbook

Net monitor only records the internet traffic on the main wired pc...I need a tool that records the actual internet usage that goes to/from my ISP (TalkTalk)

It also includes sreaming data from my PC to my PS3.

I'm no expert but i think this would have to be done at router level but i don't think standard routers will be able do this kind of reporting.

If there is a tool out there that would do this though i would be very interested :)

I dont know of a software that works in the way you would like . think broadband does have alarms etc and you can set limits so for instance you could allow one computer more dl/up than another if you installed software on each ,its not a fix but a workaround and involves checking the stats from time to time

Also I have an old Windows XP Laptop for backup/occasional use etc.
Checked on my ISP website..TalkTalk and they monitor the usage at their end for you..you just log into your account and check broadband usage (Updated nightly).

Also found they have upgraded my account to unlimited downloads, so all that fuss for nothing.

You can prob set up your LAN to be bridged to wireless and let your laptops connect to your wired computer that way all traffic is monitored

Slingshot. 5Mbps, Currently getting 2Mbps
That's good news ,however be aware unlimited isn't exactly that as there is a fair usage policy
(at least BT has ) and over 100GB means your connection gets throttled the next month and if you go over the following month it continues before long you slow to a crawl , more like the doggie paddle than surfing! anyhow glad you sorted it.
