Stay with a prominent brand--Samsung, LG, Asus, etc. Shouldn't be any reason to get fancy unless you need Blu-Ray or have some unusual situation.

Be aware that certain laptops have restricted space to mount a burner. You'll have to figure that out on your own based on your particular laptop. There are "slim line" burners, burners that have a tray mechanism, and those that don't.

I would generally avoid RW (re-writable) discs unless you have some sort of over-riding need for re-writable. Just stick with standard stuff that isn't re-writable.

I haven't done a lot of research or burning lately, but as of a few years ago Taiyo-Yuden and Verbatim were highly regarded manufacturers of blank disks. But I think Taiyo-Yuden announced last year that they were getting out of the business---the market for burning discs has shrunk considerably.

What is the brand and model number of the laptop?

I wouldn't go to Ebay to start with.

Slim 12.7 mm, 5.25", DVD Burner, CD / DVD Burners, CD / DVD / Blu-Ray Burners & Media, Components - Newegg.com

above is a pile of DVD burners at Newegg.

Most likely, you CAN'T use most of them. Most of them are for PCs, not laptops, and would NOT fit into your laptop.

You probably need a "slim line" burner that are much lower in height.

Or you could get an external burner that sits on your desk and connects by cable to the laptop.

You are misunderstanding.

The first 2 paragraphs mentioned brand names for burners.

You need to find out what will fit in a Dell Latitude D630.

I suspect that is ONLY a slim line burner OR an external burner.

Which do you want?
