I am installing Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on a new hard disk drive on a Dell Vostro 3550 laptop. I found this thread which is similar to my problem, but I am still confused about the driver installation.

When I use the service tag to bring up the drivers available for download, there are no chipset drivers included. When I look at all the drivers available for the Vostro 3550, as mentioned in the referenced thread, I find four drivers but it is not clear which one/ones I should install.
1. Wistron USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver
2. Intel HM67 Express Chipset Family Driver
3. Intel Management Engine Interface Driver
4. Realtek RTS5138 Card Reader Driver

I have the following issues in Device Manager, all under Other devices, and all with yellow !:
Ethernet Controller
Network Controller
PCI Simple Communications Controller
SM Bus Controller
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Unknown device
Unknown device

I have one of three USB ports working. I have no network connectivity.

So far, I have tried installing from Dell downloads these drivers in the following order:
Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030/Advanced-N 6230 Bluetooth Adapter Driver
Intel HD Graphics 3000 Driver

The Centrino Wireless-N driver did install but did not give me wireless access.
The Graphics driver did install and correct the video resolution as expected.

I have been reading that I first need to install chipset drivers, so I have the following questions:

Which of the four drivers should I install?
Do I need to uninstall the Centrino Wireless-N driver before?
How can I resolve the other issues in device manager that do not seem to have corresponding drivers?

Thanks.

Okay. Installed those four chipset drivers. I still don't have any network hardware available so can't go online to do Windows Update. There are four missing drivers:
Ethernet Controller
Network Controller

Should I uninstall "Intel PROSet/Wireless Software for Bluetooth Technology" from Programs and Features | Uninstall or change a program dialog?

After Windows Update installed 9 updates, I had two missing drivers.

Based on the Network Controller Hardware ID:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53258086&REV_34
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53258086
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&CC_028000
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&CC_0280

and information from the thread I linked earlier, I could see the correct driver for the Network Controller is
Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000/1030, Advanced-N 6230 Driver (R311898) which installed and now wifi is working.

I now have one missing driver:

Unknown Device with Hardware ID:

ACPI\SMO8800
*SMO8800

I also think I should install a monitor driver, as the current driver says Generic PnP Monitor, but I'm not sure which one to install out of 5 possibilities.

The replacement hdd is a Seagate Momentus, almost identical to the original one. I'm also wondering if I need to update it's firmware, and if the firmware from the dell site would be the correct one, or should I go to the Seagate site for that.

No external monitor. That generic driver is not for the LCD screen in the laptop?

And thanks so much for your help. You've been a life saver. It must be getting close to bed time over there, I'm thinking ;)
