Friend cleaned his heatsink and now fan is failing, intermittent. Initial search from google is it's 90mm CPU fan so wondering if he can order stock and then swap it out, or if he needs a parts number to reorder. He doesn't want to open it again so I'd like to have the part there when I arrive next week to swap in for him, if possible.

quiet fan for slimline desktop

It's sounded like a Hoover since he got it so does it need the more expensive quiet model suggested above or will the stock ones here suffice? https://www.google.com/search?q=92m...7e5f13604f834f&bpcl=39650382&biw=1067&bih=533

Thanks Bob, that's looking like the only OEM match but wonder if the one recommended here as quieter at half the price is worth a spin: Noctua 92mm Quiet Computer Fan - same fan model even cheaper here ships $3.40 Priority Mail from nearby: http://www.cputopia.com/noctua-nf-b9-92mm-vortex-control-sso-bearing-computer-fan.html

What's confusing is the OEM choice appears to show a heatsink under it? New Genuine Acer Aspire X1200 X1300 X1301 X1420 X1420G X1700 X1800 X3812 CPU Fan | eBay

I feel like I need to see the fan, check it's mobo connection first. The OEM doesn't show mm specs so I wonder if 92mm is standard here?

I've pulled the Fan out.

When I google the PN: hi. 10800.028 e
I learn it's Socket 775, 95mm which I confirmed by measuring fan diameter.

He'd like to save some money from the $35 replacement exact match here: http://www.cdsparts.com/p-450-new-acer-aspire-x1200-x1300-x1301-x1800-x3200-x3300-x3810-cpu-fan.aspx

But this one is used: http://www.txcesssurplus.com/servlet/the-11568/Acer-HI.10800.028-Heatsink-%26/Detail and doesn't make clear it's four prong.

This one is close but has three prong: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5521233&sku=YYT1-10920274

I think I'll call Tiger Direct in the A.M. since they have a big selection and I need more help spec'ing this, would like to get just the fan if possible.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I must admit that I know diddly about notebook CPU HSFs. In my ignorance, I expect them to be highly proprietary.

This Aspire is their slimline model, but since the OEM versions of the fan/heat sink is labeled Gateway when you google the P/N it may have been developed by Gateway. It is quite a challenge to work in the compact case.

However after pulling the fan off we notice that the back side of the blades are coated with the same (weighty?) nicotine dust that he had cleaned of the front of the fan blades causing the fan to struggle and stop intermittently. There was some back and forth play with blades, too, which made me pessimistic, but we put the fan back on the heatsink and it has run fine for 12 solid hours since.

I'm still curious why the fan (a $5 part) only appears to be sold connected to the heat sink because it would be nice to be able to screw on a new one if necessary. However if required to replace it then it will be good to re-paste the replacement heat sink anyway to check the condition of the paste.

4 Pin Intel P4 Socket 775 CPU Cooler Cooling Fan PC 12V | eBay

I'm about to order this fan which matches the Socket 775 however there are conflicting specs when you scroll down showing the Fan 85mm with the W 95mm and L 95mm. The measure between the screws on the fan is 95mm.

It also is not a P4 processor but Celeron x2 however I don't think that matters since its confirmed Socket 775 and what really matters is if the screws can fit, right?

What do you think?
