Hi folks!

I have been a PC gamer for quite a while now and I just recently got myself a gamepad which is similar to a PS2 controller.

But I played a couple of games and realised that I would have to relearn how to play games with the gamepad.

Well, that has let me down since I imagined that playing with a gamepad would actually enhance my gameplay as all buttons would be at my fingertips.

In quite a few games, I find there are no default mappings for my controller (eg Halo 1) and the ones that do give default mappings, give it a bit awkwardly.

For eg. in NFS Most Wanted, the default for my controller is steering with left analog stick and accel/braking with the right analog stick.

That is totally opposite of what I have been using for any racing game for all these years, as I am right handed and was used to steering with the right hand.

So, I wanna know what are good defaults for fps and racing games for PS2 type controllers.

This is what my gamepad looks like:

Thanks for your time!

You could try something like Xpadder which maps the keyboard to controller.

I used this for Call Of Duty 4.

Looks awesome an4rew! Thanks buddy!

I will try it out and post my results here.

Meanwhile, I am still wondering what are the default assignments or the most preferred ones on PS2 consoles for fps games like Gears of war or Halo and racing games like NFS Most Wanted.

So that I can learn to play like console on PC so that I can pwn those n00bs! :D

Thanks again an4rew!

I myself broke down and bought a dual mode Saitek Cyborg 3 PS2700 controller - Mad Catz Saitek PS2700 Controller Review -- PlayStation Universe - the software to control it is massive, but the good thing is that I can assign the settings as *I* feel I want to.

It sounds like the xModder will do the same for you, so instead of looking for the default settings (which, 9 times out of 10 I never go with regardless of which console I am on) you should try playing with the settings yourself to see what you are most comfortable with.

One example - I use the left thumb stick for steering and the right trigger for acceleration, with the button closest to the holder (of the top 4 buttons on the right) for brakes and the left button (same set of buttons) for handbrake, but have recently experimented with using the *left* trigger for hand braking, when playing racing games like G.R.I.D. and NFS: Shift - it has made a world of difference than trying to use default settings. For example, I can keep the accelerator mashed down *and* brake simultaneously a lot easier now than when both are set as buttons on top - it *can* be done, but it sure ain't easy.

That is part of what makes it awesome (and also part of the reason why most of he newer games, even on consoles, have a "custom" setting when it comes to controls).

HTH

i have original PS2 controller connected through usb adapter and i only use analog sticks to look around/scroll map/move character etc. in racing games i use only d-pad and buttons :p
i don't like analog stick steering/acceleration control. i prefer steering wheel for that.

Thanks Seven Eleven! You gave me just the info I need! Also thanks to johngalt and an4rew for their suggestions!

I find myself very busy now-a-days to game, but will look into it when I get the chance to.

Cheers!
