Right this morning my laptop said it was to update so I turned the postpone to 4 hours (like you do) and accidentally pressed restart even though I didn't want to. In my amazing quick thinking brain I pressed the button to turn the computer off before it got to restart. Sk after I turned it on all I got was a black screen the processor boots up and lights flash but just get constant black screen.
I know its nothing to do with hardware. And I know it's down to windows. I know I'm most likely going have to reboot windows but I CBA. Any one have any other ideas on bow to cure this? T
Thanks Kent

Are you saying the video is not initializing at all?
Sorry but boot post has nothing to do with windows, it's controlled strictly by the system bios.

If I understood what you said, you powered off the computer, before it had a chance to finish configuring the updats, which is a NO, NO. Can you boot into Safe Mode? If so, delete the updates involved, and reinstall them after booting regularly to desktop. This time let it reboot as it needs to properly configure the system.

No, if you get no BIOS screens, it is as Maguscreed said, the problem is with something besides Windows. Do you get any BIOS beeps? If so, exactly how many and in what pattern?

What you have done is interrupted an important system file update and now the coding is broken that allows windows to boot, I know of a few that have done something similar, basically what you have to do is System Restore using a Backup disc(installation disc) unless you run a backup partition or have an option to system restore from a recovery console

This would only be true, if the computer was displaying BIOS screens on startup, and the black screens came afterward. From what he said, this is not true, therefore it had nothing to do with the updates or the manner in which he handled them.

The vital question now is as I asked previously...is there a BIOS beep at startup. Since he doesn't give his system specs, I can't be sure of the beep codes, but they can be found here:

Yes that could be true but if his LT has quick boot it will not display and skip bios
But i think your right that we will have to determine if anything at all is displaying on the screen leading up to the alleged blackscreen

Boot the Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD to run Startup Repair repeatedly with reboots.

Startup Repair should automate System Restore, but if not and it won't start then run Startup Repair from the Recovery Tools list.

If disk won't boot after setting first in BIOS, or show prompt to "Press Any key..." even after using one-time BIOS boot menu key for your model, enter BIOS setup to see if HD is detected. If so, reset to optimal defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

If these steps fail, report back exactly what happened with each step including any error messages verbatim. We will then have more steps including testing hardware.

Hey soon as I turn the laptop on it just gives a black screen. Bios doesn't come up on start up usually just comes to a fujitsu siemens start up screen with option of boot or bios (i think that's what the options are). I have a fujitsu siemens amilo li1718 running windows 7. Of top of my head the specs are: 1.6 core duo, 160gb hard drive, 2gb ram, 125mb ati graphics. I'll try and use the recovery tomorrow. I'd of thought because I interrupted a windows update that would of what caused it. Thanks for your help people keep your ideas coming

Thanks gregrocker but how can I perform this with a black screen. And just to add on I tried pressing the cap lock key and num lock but they are not responding.

Interrupting an update should be reparable using disk, but you seem certain there is no POST which may confirm hardware failure.

Try another monitor.

If same persists, are fans running and LED's on PC lit? Which?

If not, try another power supply.

If so, power down to carefully pull out the RAM sticks to see if mobo starts beeping upon restart.

If beeps, try reinstalling video card.

I am not a hardware expert so others can refine these rough steps.

Thanks will try monitor in morning. The LEDs are flashing but I can't say if it post or not cos couple months back I had to replace power jack in on the mother board and kinda broke the pc speaker. Never got round to buying a new one. Now I'm really regretting it lol. I'll let you know in morning how it goes with another monitor. Tha ms appreciate it.
Just started playing a new game that took hours to download :(
