Hello pooch and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think you'll find that most people on this Forum do not recommend using registry cleaners. Windows 7 is not like XP which needed extra cleaning tools and tweaks to run efficiently. Windows 7 is very good at keeping its own registry under control.

As far as special software that can detect and delete old files and folders, it will depend on which files and folders you're talking about. If you created these files and folders, then only you would know if you don't need them anymore. But if you're talking about system files and folders, then Windows 7 own Disk Cleanup tool is probably all you need. Another free tool that is often recommended is CCleaner. (It also has a registry cleaner but most people still recommend not using it. But if you insist on using a registry cleaner, back up the registry, create a restore point, make a system image, etc. Do something that will allow you to get your computer working again when the registry gets hosed. Not if it gets hosed, but when it gets hosed.)

There are several anti-virus tools recommended on this forum. Some are free and some cost money. But just keep in mind that there is no such thing as an anti-malware product that will be 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a product we'd all be using it. These Forum threads discuss the pros and cons of various products.

The nice thing about free products is you can test them (one at a time) and see which one you like the best.

   Warning
Failure to completely remove an anti-malware product could result in a new product not installing correctly or not working correctly. It may not be enough to remove the product through Control Panel > Programs and Features. It's important to see if the product you are removing has its own official uninstaller. Singular Labs has a list of the most popular uninstallers. If you test a product and it's not listed, go to the manufacturer's website to see if they have an uninstaller.

NOT -- that I would trust. There are products out there that will claim to do this, but mostly, they want you to spend money for stuff you don't need.

Just about anything installed has a "check for updates" option -- and that is the best way to do it.

I use Secunia PSI 2.0 and FileHippo UpdateChecker.
These programs are free, never tried to sell me anything, and I find them helpful for keeping a PC updated.

Free Security Software Download - (PSI) - Secunia - Checks for missing security patches and out of date programs. (I don't care for the latest Version 3.0, so I use 2.0)

FileHippo.com Update Checker - FileHippo.com - Checks for new versions of programs.

There are also many "Latest Version" sticky threads in Seven Forums.
