Hi,

System Specs:
Windows 7 x86 Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo
3GB RAM

I did a copy/paste on 2 photos (.jpg) from my desktop to the Pictures folder which to me seemed to take a little longer than what was expected.

The total size for the 2 photos was 175kb and the time it took was 8-9 seconds.

Now, I personally have copied and pasted photos much faster than this speed on the same system in the past, and hence was wondering what could have gone wrong here? What could be slowing down this particular task?

Please advise.

blankblack, was this a one-time occurrence, or are you seeing this systematically?

The problem continues to occur to this day. And might I add that it only seems to happen often with pictures that have been freshly introduced on the system (be it through the internet or any other external source).

So you're saying, your problem is persistent, but does not happen with files that have been on your hard drive for a while?

If so, I would check the Search options to see how Search indexes your system. Also, check with the anti-virus, how often it scans your files. Most likely, the culprit is the Search, but then it would be normal behavior if you do want all of our folders indexed. How much time passes between downloading the pictures and your problem disappearing?

Now that you mentioned it, downloading pictures from an external CD or thumb drive also seems to take long.

Pardon my poor knowledge on the subject, but how do I check the Search options to see how Search indexes my system? What information exactly am I supposed to reply back with?

EDIT: And yes, it does not seem to happen with files that have been on my hard drive for a while.

I'm think when you cut and past a new photo it is also indexing at the same time. Once this is done the speed should be better. From my understanding when you move something from A to B a re indexing occurs. This is the way Windows 7 knows where it's at when you search for it later.

@Layback Bear - So, must I just let it be as it is? Nothing to worry about perhaps...
