need help to remove programs from start up

my startup time has been longer of late, sometimes much longer. i log in and wait at the welcome screen. i checked performance information>advanced tools and saw this

paraphrasing..these programs are causing windows to start slowly:

program ccleaner
date reported 11/18/2011
time taken 62.2 seconds

avast service
date 10/30/2011
55.2 seconds

avast service
date 3/15/2012
31.2 seconds

it suggests i consider not starting these three programs how do i do that

the last one is a duplicate and i may need that one, but the other two entries are old and not needed.

Go to the start menu, type msconfig in the run line at the bottom of the menu, a small tabbed page will arrive, choose the start up tab, in here you can disable anything you don't want to load at startup.

i did try that but saw only one avast and no ccleaner. any reason why? should i be in admin mode. currently i am in user mode

Follow the steps in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 to achieve a Clean Boot then see how Startup times improve.

I'd also change to Microsoft Security Essentials for best performance as Avast has fallen somewhat out of favor here over the past year.
