Need help to resolve Windows 7 Update error.

Hello.
The Windows Update in my dell Inspiron laptop has stopped working for more than 6 months now. When i click on the update icon it tells me computer needs to be restarted, it did not work. Anyway I have tried various solutions available on internet but nothing helped. I cannot find the Update service when i search in services.msc section. Is it that some virus has corrupted .dll registry files in my laptop?
I have even tried copying the wuauserv registry files from a healthy laptop but the issue wasn't resolved.
Can someone please help me fix it?

As a start, download and run this Fix it from Microsoft,

I know the error below is slightly different to urs, But the FIX is for Windows update is generic

Error: Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer when you try to install Windows Updates
