Hi guys,

I've got a 32 bit version on windows 7 enterprise edition on my dell studio laptop. Last night I was playing NFS undercover and whilst the game was still running shut the screen sending the computer into hibernate mode. This morning, when i opened my laptop it started as usual, then crashed without notification and restarted on its own. After the restart, I came to the login screen where in I entered my user credentials and all i can then see was "Welcome" with the waiting icon. I've tried leaving it for good 30 minutes but it doesnt help.

I did a forceful shut down and tried to restart in safe mode (both with and without CMD) in order to shut it down properly but without any luck. It displayed the "shutting down" message and didnt do anything.

I'm stuck and its not even my laptop (given by my company) so i need to fix this issue quickly! Please help!!

cheers

It looks like that you I will have to do a repair install, as it has corrupted something.

While I do believe you'll end up needing to do a repair installation you might wish to try to boot it into Safe Mode, if you are not familiar with this you simply need to hit f8 repeatedly when it gets to the initial screen with the DELL logo and prior to the Windows 7 splash screen. If you can get it into Safe Mode w/o issue you might be able to try a Restore System to Previous time by going to Backup Restore and choose a date 2 days or so and see if this sets things right, there have been quite a few updates and it is quite possible one of these is the issue.

I doubt jaded has any discs with this machine as it appears to be a company laptop. As he/she says "I'm stuck and its not even my laptop (given by my company) so i need to fix this issue quickly" He probably has not got the right permissions to delve too far into the system even if he could get in an it appears he can't!
I think the only thing to be done is to come clean and report it back to his company!

Given that it's a company-provided computer, your best bet is to take it to the IT folks at the company and see what they will do.

My guess is that they are likely to "reimage" it, thus wiping out all your files and data.

Hopefully there's a Windows disc laying around the office somewhere.

You could come clean (which most boss's will respect) and just explain the situation. You shut the lid while it was powering down and the install got corrupted. It's still better than having to explain a virus or trojan due to using the computer against company regulations.

Yep, this is a company laptop, and that's what your IT department is there for. If they know what they are doing, they'll likely try a repair install first, and given the fact they are IT, they'll know what OS you have and what disc to use.

On a side note, if you want to play games, do it on your own personal computer. I'm an IT Manager, and nothing gets me frustrated more than someone who wrecks their laptop because they installed a game, or some other non-business, non-approved app. I've even heard of some companies resorting to disciplinary actions for people who do this.

well..

i've tried safe mode and it does login, but after ages and its very slow to take any command. I've files on the machine which I made the mistake of not backing up on the shared user drive hence I need to get it working. Have tried windows startup repair as well but it takes me back to the same screen. I'll keep trying for a solution.

thanks for the help guys..

Be very careful that you don't get yourself in more trouble than you are already. I really think you are taking the dangerous route. I still think to come clean would be your best bet but the choice is yours. I wish you luck anyway, I think you are going to need it
