Need Help With Basic Protection

Hi,

I have a HP ProBook S.Series Windows 7 laptop. I have added malwarebytes and not sure what else is still on. .

I just got a sales pitch from tech help. We have two laptops and we are seniors who are don't go to many sites, just youtube, and a couple discussion or news sites.

What I'm asking is should I keep Malewarebytes and how do I know what other security I still have? What other protection do I need and is the free protection ok since one is in trial now.

The icon says MSE is protecting me now.

You should seriously consider picking up one of the last lifetime licenses for Malwarebytes,
It's either that or use a different antivirus MSE is not a good choice unless you have mbam pro/ premium,

I believe there is also a offer for just the activation code for about 30.u.s. well worth it mbam is the new Basic security imho

TZ, I'm not sure I understand if this Malwarebytes is all I need or how to go from trial to permanent,. Also confused about lifetime deal. We had our son doing all the security set ups for free ,now he is busy with new job so not helping anymore. I went to KimKomando tI heard on radio to get malewarebytes when I got groovnio virus or whatever it was.

Thanks Ig. I have no idea what it was except confusing. We went to ask why hubby's laptop won't accept camera today to load garden pictures. After over an hour of him being inside our laptop it still won't accept camera.

What Malwarebytes do you have? Open it and look for the "about" tab. What does it say?

If you have not paid any money to Malwarebytes you probably have the "free version". It is good for what it does, but it does NOT protect you in real time. Instead, it will FIND bad stuff ONLY when you open Malwarebytes and run a scan.

The paid version of Malwarebytes DOES protect in real time.

There are 2 versions of the paid version:

1: The older one is called "Malwarebytes Pro". It is now quite hard to find. The good thing about it was that it was a LIFETIME license. You paid once and nevermore, for one PC.

2: The new one, which is now called "Malwarebytes Premium". It's easy to find. It works fine, but the bad thing is that it is a subscription. You pay every year. If you quit paying, it quits working.

So, many feel the older paid version is better. If you can find it. A year ago, you could find it for 25, sometimes for 15. For a lifetime license, one time payment. Now, I see from Thrashzone's link, that it is up to 55 at Amazon. That's because it's in demand because you don't have to pay every year.

The current Malwarebytes Premium is 25 per year for up to 3 PCs.

You should run a scan right now because there is no telling what that yokel from Tech Help did to your PC. The free version of Malwarebytes won't protect you UNLESS you run it.

A "free trial" implies it is a temporarily working version of a paid product. Probably works for 30 days. Probably a 30 day version of "Malwarebytes Pro".

The free version of Malwarebytes is probably what you have now if you have never paid them any money.

Or do you know for a FACT that you have a trial version of a paid product?

Look at that "about" tab in Malwarebytes.

The free version is free forever. It is NOT a trial.

My guess is that you have a trial version of Malwarebytes Premium. It protects in real time. But the trial version will quit working at some point--probably 30 days.

It's good for 3 PCs if you pay 25 per year. A subscription, like cable TV.

Your alternative is to get rid of it and buy the older "Malwarebytes Pro" for 55. Two copies. One for each PC. Total cost 110.

You have to decide if you want to pay 110 today for 2 PCs forever or 25 per year for up to 3 PCs, one year at a time, every year.

Both products provide real time protection and work in the same way.

If you choose to go with Malwarebyte Pro, it might be wise to first thoroughly remove the trial version of Malwarebytes Premium. I think there is a software download at Malwarebytes web site that will do a complete removal. I'm not sure if that is necessary, but it can't hurt.

McAfee is generally mediocre and difficult to remove. I would not use it personally.
