This is embarrassing! I was well versed in library-like searches in XP, but I've never been able to fathom the same simple things in W7.
In XP I could bring up my documents and easily display the results by date modified. I could search through the main folder and include all of it's subfolders and the results would display by date and time. Clicking the date heading would sort the results in ascending or descending order, and one of the columns would display the path to the document (i.e the location of the folder or subfolder containing the document). Beyond the ascending or descending bit, I don't know how to do that in W7, even though I've been using it for years.
Since I can't figure out how to do that, I assumed I could easily use the date range filter. I can't figure that out either. I open my documents, click on the search box in the upper right, and it brings up a calendar with today's date highlighted. I am prompted to select a date or a date range. I don't know how to select a date range. If I use the calendar to go back to say 8/1/2014 and select that date it immediately tells me that no documents were modified on that date. I wanted 8/1 to be the beginning date of the range, and assumed that scrolling the calendar forward I could then select the end date. It obviously does not work that way.
Not a single tutorial has been of any help thus far. I'm sure its very simple. Perhaps too simple for a tutorial.
