Solved need help with strange (glitch?) with sound randomly not working

I do not know if this is common, or if im literally the only one in the universe with this issue, but its where applications (with the exception of FL studio evading it) take hogged control of the sound card or something.

Basically, I will have a skype call going, and editing video, youtube doesn't play sound, applications like sony vegas or ACID, will refuse to play because there is "no audio device" windows media player throws an "unknown error" which is "no sound card to play the file" and the only way to get them to work is to disable, and re-enable the sound card, then minimize and bring back up those applications and play them again, which doesn't bug me...


BUT audio recorders DROP the recording and delete it randomly at any given time because apparently "no sound card detected" even though windows sees it RIGHT THERE

the worst case is with camtasia recorder where AFTER capturing audio, if the sound card is "not there" according to it, it DELETES the AUDIO it ALREADY CAPTURED along with the video it captured because the sound device to capture system audio does not "exist"

I have looked all over the internet for a solution, and found nothing but the usual sound card driver installation failures

the same thing applies to the microphone (both internal mix and the ext jack) when skype is in a call


I HAVE re-installed my audio drivers SIX times over the course of a single day with NO remedy and factory resetting my laptop is NOT an option, i have stuff on it i cannot back up because i dont have the storage for it all, software I no longer have the licence keys for will have to be paid for again, and i do not want to re-customize my settings and custom icons for files without program association

Some additional data would be helpful:

• The model number of the HP laptop
• The brand and model number of the sound chip

There is a good possibility that the problem lies with the Camtasia software. The test for that would be to uninstall Camtasia and install any free program that does the same job and see if the problem still occurs (No sound card detected).

I can't really find the sound xhip model/brand but the driver says "IDT High Definition audio CODEC"

The laptop is an HP pavilion dv6


and regarding the camtasia reinstall/uninstall, I havent had this issue on any other computer but this one and i need to capture the mic and system audio&skype call on two different tracks because the system capture drowns the mic audio so i cant have them thrown into one audio track the file ditching problem also occurs with
Amolto call recorder for skype, sony ACID keeps recordings then complains after if the problem happens so acid captures i can at least salvage when it leaves behind a large unplayable file (WMP acts like its 0 seconds long) Fruity loops ignores the "glitch" and actually plays, ignoring the no sound card and actually works -but this is a demo, i cant work with it

The original driver for that unit was a Vista driver. It may be that that driver must be installed in compatibility mode in order to work properly. I don't know where you got a W7 driver if that is what you did, but sometimes the W7 driver is produced for basic functionality only.

I see that the Vista diver is a Conextant High Definition Audio Driver from 2007. There were problems with that driver package from HP. But without an exact model number it is hard to tell if it is the same one.

problems started after upgrading from 7 HOME (factory default) to 7 pro for windows XP mode
when my headphones randomly became its own "sound device" playing music, while the main speakers blasted a skype call which isnt how its supposed to work, so i disabled the "device" that handled only headphones, thats when the real signs started showing

Well that laptop has a W7 Pro x64 driver, so I think we can stop looking at the driver for now, and concentrate on the software.

Windows has it's own set of sound control settings and the audio software will have it's own. It is important that there is not conflicting settings. Have you checked both and compared them?

I did not know that there were windows sound configs and the sound driver (software) configs

where can i access these?

One trick to be aware of: Windows hides disabled devices by default. But if you right click inside the box (On the Recording Tab, for instance) you can select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices".

There may or may not be a control program installed for the driver package. There is for Realtek and Conexant, I'm not sure for IDT. If the icon is not already in the taskbar for you to click on and open, then go to Start > and type IDT in the search box and see if the control program comes up on the list.

ok , I mentioned in earlier posts, that i had to disable, and re-enable to temp remedy the issue, while causing other problems in the process and were done here.... what do i look for?, its when another program is playing sound, other programs cannot play sound through the same device as if software has device hogging programmed into them

the device, communications headphones outputs the headphone jacks, that the enabled device ALSO outputs to when headphones are plugged into the jack, if both are enabled, it works all normal...
until the "glitch" happens again and the mains output from the speakers and comm headphones is what gets the headphones, causing the computer to blast out the speakers at night, and people complain at me for blasting things loud on purpose

It almost sounds like the headphones jack is defective. The main speakers should go off whenever something is plugged into the phones jack.
Let me see if I can find our resident audio guy.

Can you break it down to just one function? e.g. not have Skype, YouTube, Recording DAW software, etc., all going at the same time and all vying for the sound device. Too many devices at one time and if one of the applications does not release the sound device then it would act like you are seeing.

If one application you try does not cause the problem, try another (just the one application) and see if it does it with that.

If any application will cause it, there could be a Windows corruption for the sound. Uninstalling the device (IDT) in the Device Manager (but NOT the drivers) then restarting the PC will force Windows to reinstall the sound and many times fix flakey problems.

happens with ALL programs, and i need skype and a recorder going at once, because i dont feel like having two computers just to record a skype call in clean quality and this is my first computer to do that, everything else i used to have never had this and could have 75 things using the sound at once

Hate jumping in late on these posts, but have you ran an sfc/scannow to check for corrupted system files?

What do you use with Skype? A standard analog PC headset (plugs into the mic and headphone jacks) or a USB type? If you are using a USB type usually they will change the default playback to the USB headset. On Recording, unless you have the Stereo Mix (could be called System Mixer) set as the default recording device that could also be causing some conflicts and problems.

I personally don't like the Microsoft "fixit". Its never fixed anything for me.
