Hi, I'm new to this thread and I need help.
I've recently built a custom computer for the first time, I followed all the instructions and tutorials from various sources. I'm running an ASUS bio, with sata hard drive and dvd optical drive. I have the windows 7 OS dvd and an Ubuntu OS cd. When ever I insert Windows 7 for "boot media" and press a key, an underscore _ just flickers. I can hear the optical drive work away, and the HDD led flicker a bit, then it just stops and I get this Underscore. I've set SATA to IDE and put the boot priority to the optical drive. When I instert ubuntu to see if I can get an OS at all, I get the loading screen then something like "Cannot find a medium containing a live file system."
I've checked the cables, made sure the optical drive is a master, even switched it to cable select. At one time I had the Win 7 boot/install menu working, but it said something about being unable to find install drivers?!?! Can someone help me? I only just started getting back into windows and computers for that matter, so my tech level is kinda low. I figured for a gaming computer it is best to go custom. Thanks.

I'm thinking that the optical drive is broken/old, so should I use a usb? And if I do, can I just copy the files straight from the dvd to the usb and use that as boot media, or do I have to get an ISO file?

Hello destrodex, welcome to Seven Forums!

Start with a look through the information contained in this tutorial linked below; if Ubuntu has ever been installed to the HDD before now, be sure to check the steps number 9 and 10 and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

Actually I think I have succsessfully started the install, I might have been trying to boot the wrong way. I did boot override and boot priority, and in the end I ended up using ASUS "ez mode" and booting from that menu, and it seems to work... Earlier I thought the HDD was sata 6bs and I put it in a 6gbs slot, and then figured that it was a 3gbs so I moved it accordingly. whatever the reason, I have passed that part. I will post if I experience any further problems, thanks for your support!
