Solved Need opinions about registry software

Used to use a registry tool called Registry Crawler. It was one of my "must haves" to remove traces of programs that I uninstalled. The program allowed you to enter a search term and it would create a list of ALL registry entries that contain that search term.
Registry Crawler went bye-bye (only after I paid for the upgrade) and am looking for a replacement. Currently using Registry Seeker, but not that fond of it.

So if you know of program that will accomplish this or a site that discusses utilities I would be very appreciative. Thanks.

Revo is my recommendation too. Its the only thing I trust to touch my registry besides me.

I also use Revo to remove programs and all those little left overs. Works great.Other than using regedit to search things out such as you mentioned I also use Everything Search. It will find anything you type in if it is on your system. With a right click you can find where it is and a lot of other information. One must be careful using this program. Once removed it for sure is gone.

I say again. Windows built in regedit and these programs must be use wisely.

I've found NirSoft utilities to be very safe. RegScanner will pull up searches in a list. Also I think you can double click or some other action to bring up the RegEdit open to that key.

Also CCleaner has a "registry issue" finder that lets you delete unreferenced keys. But I would back up before making changes. I only got burned once when that release had a bug in that feature. It's since been fixed. But when doing Registry it's good practice to back up. CCleaner provides a .reg backup, you can make a restore point and also use ERUNT free reg backup. Sounds like a lot but the restore point takes about 10 times longer than doing the other two.

I found that registry cleaners are more trouble than they are worth. And in Windows 7 they really are not required.

Since not everyone knows what ERUNT is, and most people are familiar with Restore Points, it gives an idea what's involved to use ERUNT and the CCleaner .reg backup. The point is not that restore points suck. You seem to be good at getting everything I post reversed. I guess we're not on the same brain wave length.

It was not my intent to reverse anything. I was only trying to point out that the built in ability of Windows 7 to create its own restore point is quiet handy when needed. I do believe that restore point is also used when one can't boot into Windows. Boot in Last Know Good Configuration. I do use Ccleaner and it's method of backing up changes of the registry also. Using more than one safety net to me is a good thing.
I will watch my post very closely so I don't do anymore (Once again). I'm surly sorry if my post was abusive to anybody.

Next time you are in that situation I would try CCleaner registry component as I mentioned. I've tried some other registry cleaners that were good such as jv16 PowerTools. But sometimes if they are a bit too powerful it's easy to get deletion happy when you see all that clutter.

But if you back up the registry first you should be able to experiment a bit. Main thing is not to use something so invasive that it could keep you from booting the next time around.

Thank you. Funny thing is I was so concerned when I was approaching 2,000. I just hit 3,000 without noticing. Weird eh? heh heh
