Need Router help

I'm ready to start securing my Router for the Acer Laptop..
All is running good on it.

Router Info..

Belkin Enhanced Wireless Router N 150
Ideal for : Streaming music, Videos, from the web,file sharing, and transferring photos.
There is a button just below a lock with WPS on it..referred to as Push-Button Security.
Belkin says this Easily safeguards your wireless network from internet intruders.

That's all I see right now to give info about the router.. Ask for more if you need it..I'll try to help.

Hi,

Sorry it's been a while getting back to you been busy with other things

From the Info you've given I think the following is the set-up you want for wireless security. To be sure you will need the router model No that is on the printed on the base/back of the device - Normally f*D****, but the tutorial is fairly general for Belkin Routers o should meet needs anyway.

Belkin : Support : Protecting your network with WPA/WPA2 security

Once you have followed the guide to set things up, the next time you try to attach to the router from the wireless laptop you should be prompted to enter a key (this should be remembered by win7 so you should not have to remembering another password).

Looking at the Belkin support section that the link is to there are lots of good tutorials for your router, so It may be worthwhile taking a look around there when you have time.

Once you have the wireless security set-up the only extra thing you need to do is decide which type of network this will be, as far a Win7 is concerned, as soon as the network is detected you will be prompted to decide which type this network will be.

There are three types available, one of which we can ignore - The work type network is used where a business has a server that controls everything so does not apply to the normal home situation.

The two others are Home or Public

Home - This network is one where the only other computers that have access to it are known and trusted by you. This should be ideal for your situation as it is the network type that allows you to share files and printers between your Desktop and laptop.

Public this type of network is used where you do not know the other users for example in a public place, like a coffee shop or similar, this does not allow any sharing so protects the laptop. If you are not at your home and you connect to a free wireless network this is the choice to make.

Every network you connect to will have this setting made and will remember the choice you make, so whenever you return home you will automatically connect correctly.

There is an option in the "network and sharing center" to change the network type if you ever wish to

I made some more screen shots that LPT may need ...

Please correct me if I am wrong, as I have a mix of computers/OSs and do not use "HomeGroup". I noticed in an earlier thread LPT posted she had setup her home network using the "Public" network settings. I thought that HomeGroup would only work with the "Home" network settings?

If this is so, would she have to create a new network, or can the existing network be changed from "Public" to "Home"?

The home and public settings I'm referring to here are workgroup IPv4 related firewall port exception sets and sharing presets.

Basically setting to the Home type switches on the network discovery and file and printer sharing and opens the required ports (134 - 139 & 445 of the top of my head), the public setting does the opposite.

This does not effect the homegroup settings which are a special set of ports on the IPv6 protocol.

As for swapping between Home and Public there is an option available via the Network and Sharing dialogue. You can also manually change options in either setting to match those in the other, but that does defeat the benefit of having the presets

Well ... now I am really confused. Obviously you are much better informed on this subject than I. What I was referring to was this MS link: Choosing a network location

If she is expecting to use HomeGroup when she finally gets both desktop and laptop to communicate with her router, according to the above quoted web site, she will need the "Home" network location, correct? Or am I just totally missing the meaning of your explanation? I apologize in advance because at times I can be really dense!!

Good questions. I am confused by all of this, too. I do understand what the public network is and does and I think I understand what the homegroup is and does.

Networking is not complex but does need a logical approach, I've been working with networks for years and every OS brings a different twist - but even these a built on existing technologies/functionality.
Even the new homegroup is actually controlled by the use of the HomeUser$ user group for NTFS file permissions, which are also the control set for libraries

It's the same shovel just has a brand new handle

Hello guys. I've just opened the laptop .. signed in..
I clicked my netowrk connection in the lower right corenr of the laptop Showing right now..a page came up.. showing:View your network information ans set up
on that page this is what I'm seeing :
I DO NOT show a a group or anything on the laptop..
I just show the laptop as GEORGIA-PC....
Next I see red X ( 0n a line as if to connect the laptop and the internet ... which used to show connected.. NO longer is that true.)
Next to that I see the Internet Icon..

This gets more complicated as I try to progress..
I still cannot connect to the internet .. on the LAPTOP.

Carl the laptop has no way to connect I don't think.. as I have no DSL account on it..
OR could I disconnect the DESKtop from the modem and router and just try to use the DSL connection for the Laptop.. I really don't see how that could work.. without a DSL connection on the laptop..
I sure could be mistaken on this ..
Give instructions ... I 'll sure try.

I need to make sure I understand. You have an ADSL or DSL account through your telephone or cable service provider? You should be able to connect any number of computers to that account.

Is your router wireless or Ethernet? If your router is Ethernet, you should be able to connect your laptop to the router as well as your desktop. I have a router/modem combo and it is Ethernet and wireless. My two PC's are connected to the internet via wi-fi and a TV satellite receiver is connected via Ethernet. I could also connect another computer via Ethernet. This has nothing to do with groups.

I got both my desktop and Mae Lyne's laptop connected to the internet before I started working on a home group.
