Hope I'm posting this in the right hole in the wall... if not move me :geek:

I'm looking to buy a laptop. I've been reading up a little and now I'm overwhelmed.
The hardware in my old pc wont cope with win7 and it isn't compatible with my new pc, which has Windows 7. A lappie means I can travel, which I do a bit of, and would also fulfill my need for a second pc. I work from the computer at home, and am heavily into the graphics field.

Gaming is not a big issue, and neither is the need for Office stuff. None of the reviews or such have really given me an idea of what I need. Maybe I'm more over whelmed than I think I am, but a girl could use a little advice from some smart lads.

If I've left any questions hanging let me know. I'm really swimming in deep water here. I shouldn't be coz I knew what I wanted when I had this PC custom built.

Thanks ;)

Hi Willowhoop. I'm just looking at your spec and that's a fine rig you have there. You're not going to get anywhere near that with a laptop.
I'm not clear what you want the laptop for. Is it just to travel, run W7, show folks your graphic work, keep in touch etc?

bit of a big question, really..:geek:

how are you tied for price/cost, etc..?

what do you intend to do with the laptop?

is it best specs you're after, or best bang for bucks..??

hi john
I knew I'd mislead somewhere and no doubt other loop holes will be found too.

No way do I expect to find something like my PC hun, so relax on that one.

As for purpose "Yes" to all that you have mentioned - plus - (and I'll try and keep it short), I toggle between PSCS4 PSPX3 PSP7 & PSP9 (as well as emails, forums, google and other assorted daily stuff). Each graphic program has a different purpose in completing a graphic I would be working on. flashing between these 4 programs on one screen can be eye tormenting, especially when I'm on a deadline. Two screens would half that and give me the added bonus of better comparison. I realise that screen resolutions, color etc are different.

Health reasons sometimes confine me to bed and again, the laptop, if networked to the pc, can allow me to continue working. It might be worth mentioning that I live in a one room self contained cabin, my PC is not far away.

I am looking for a reliable brand, obviously... lol. I recently purchased a second copy of Windows 7 professional, so regardless of what is on the lappie at time of purchase, I would be installing that on it. I notice that win7 home premium is offered on most of them. Price (I'm in Australia), is around the $1,500.00 limit.
I think I'd like an i5 processor over an i3, but thats not a must, just a preference.

As you can see, I've been researching since first posting. There is something to be said for feedback and someone to bounce off. :p

Thanks for the reply hun
Have a good day
Willow :)

Ok. $1500 Australian dollars is about £885 GBP. I'll presume you'll want something with a good screen at about 17"? That means what is known as a "desktop replacement" laptop and will be pretty heavy.
It'll be pretty heavy to lug around Australia, which I hear is quite a big place;)
It's 7am here and I'm just off to work.
Let us know if screen size is right and whether weight is a consideration and I'll have a hunt around when I get home-8 hours from now.
I think you should get something very nice for that price. Also is that your absolute top price or is it flexible?
I figure you're asleep now so you have a good day when you wake up, Later, John:)

Don't know if its available in Australia but I've had my eye on a certain series Acer that goes on sale here at Best Buy, et al. every few weeks for $349US. This is the ad from one such sale in May:

Trying this every time i see it in the store, it is solid as a rock with no weakness I can detect except it is loaded with bloatware - but we can help you clean it up or clean reinstall with Win7 DVD and it will be a perfect machine for light to medium duty at a great value.

Acers are as solid as their monitors which made them famous for quality. We have two here at the house (desktops and monitors). I plan to get this laptop for my Mom for Christmas unless someone can talk me out of it for good reasons.

Then for $200 more you can maybe find something high spec like another guy here did: Micro Center - MSI A6200-220US Laptop Computer - Black A6200
