Solved Need some help with reinstalling windows

Did you buy the copy of XP your friend loaded for you?

If so, do you still have the Product Key, which should suffice as qualifying you to use Win7 Upgrade version since the key is proof of ownership and not the installer.

Yes i still have the Product Key. Its for XP Pro, and the serial consists of five groups of five characters. Does that sound right to you?

ok, so for the heck of it i tried booting the the 64-bit disc again. but this time it loaded the screen that looks like the account login screen but with no account to log into. the screen stayed like that for about 3 minutes and then a windows installer window popped up. it was asking me to set the language for installation and all that stuff, it was the windows installer. what i need to know is if i should go about installing 64-bit this way or not. i just need you guys to give me the green light. thanks.

You don't need the XP key unless you decide to reinstall XP again. But if for some reason MS should decide to tighten the rules on requiring proof of a qualifying OS to use Win7 upgrade version, and you need tech support to activate, then it is wise to save the key.

It sounds like your Win7 64 bit DVD is going to boot to install.

Here are some tips to get a perfect install based on hundreds done here: http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/125874-re-install-windows-7-a.html#post1086729

just installed 64-bit!!! its like a brand new computer. i'm going through the normal stuff like installing drivers and copying files back. i forgot how much i hate Internet Explorer, i usualy use FireFox.:D
