Grab this,

CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

once run click on the SPD tab and it should show you the make and speed of what is currently installed. Then if you can find one of the same make and speed, or if you can't find the same make look for one with the same speed and latencies.

As for what is good; Corsair, Kingston, Crucial, G.Skill, etc are all good.

so i popped the back off of my laptop and saw that it has 2 slots for ram... only one was being used, and it had a kingston 4gb chip in it.

i went down to my local computer store and picked up another 4gb chip for the other slot but its a corsair brand name, they didnt have kingston

i threw it in and first right clicked computer > properties and it shows 8.00gb (7.48gb usable)

then i downloaded that program you showed me and it shows:

slot 1: ddr3, 4096mb pc3-10700 (667mhz) crucial tecnology
slot 2: ddr3, 4096mb pc3-10700 (667mhz) kingston

both are at 1.5 volts

so i should be good right? or should i pick up another crucial stick so they match?

You should be good to go as both RAM sticks are the same specification.

As far as I'm aware, the fact that one is Crucial and one is Kingston shouldn't matter.

Crucial's memory scanner will advise on the best RAM configuration for your computer if you're still in any doubt.

What CPUz shows is the current speed, MHz, your ram is running at or capable of. Even that is not always correct, this is mine and it's 1866MHz RAM, but CPUz is telling me it's 1600. There should be a label on each RAM module with the frequency, timings (i.e., 9-10-9-24) and the voltage.

To be most efficient RAM should be a matched set form the same maker.

Personally, I would get a matched set of two RAM sticks, but your system will work as is. Did you check on your specs?

m8r8j,
You're fine with the new ram. In a perfect world both sticks would be matching but with a laptop it's much less an issue. Enjoy the speed increase on video editing and the like and for the biggest bang save for a SSD drive and external enclosure and remove the stock spinner and put into the enclosure and then enjoy faster boot and program loading, cooler operation and longer battery life.

Dear Linnemeyerhere,
Kindly see my specs. Sorry for edging in sideways, the Laptop came with an "ELPIDA" 4GB RAM stick. Now, ELPIDA, a Jap. Company has gone bust and is not selling RAM sticks of it's own make!

There is another slot for RAM which i am keen to fill with a 4 GB RAM stick. The prices are real low for RAM sticks, but that's not the only reason. Transcend and Kingston are available readily. Kindly help me out!

regards,
sreedhav
