anyone have a manual or guide for these models or similar? a "gamer" notebook of few years back... my Keyboard seems to have winked out [how?] and need to disassemble...
I have searched all over Asus support [worthless], googled every which way... can't find anywhere.

has a few other issues also if any of you are experts on this one.

thx

Geekhack.org is the premier site for anything related to keyboards. Very detailed info.

You could look through the Wikis, do a search, or make a post.

Fabulous!! what a find.
thank you SO much

I just wish it showed disassembly... I gotta remove the keyboard and it has beat me like a drum so far. this is one of the "good" keyboards and I cannot figure it out. took every screw I can find out - tried to remove the face/bezel around the kbd... no dice. tried the "pop out" but looking with magnifying glass and bright light I cannot see any catch-points for popping tabs loose. :(
already broke one key.... yikes:o

TV - "how I wish you were my son" !! :geek:
I had done such a search and watched diligently a couple of tubes - but at your prompt I hit the link you sent, picked the very first vid, and it was 'close enough' to send me looking very carefully again - found the little tabs and pried that sucker out of there ! yay...
I already have the $16 replacement spotted so will give that a whirl.

other thoughts... the touchpad will track, but the buttons don't work... it is entirely separate from the kbd - I'm fearing some sort of component failure. surely those are not integrated onto a common IC are they? :(
the base of this unit vaguely looks like it was squeezed/squashed, stepped-on or something... display is fine, and it seems to work ok now with windows 8 other than some devices that did not load right and I have not yet figgered out what they are. th big things are working swell

The trackpad/mouse button component is usually a separate piece that fits in the bezel and connects to the motherboard through one of a few kinds of ribbon cable. They are replaceable, but you do need to find an exact replacement part or one very close in size and connection.

If the system shows signs of physical abuse it would be worth your while to carefully inspect the rest of the parts, particularly the motherboard, and look for any signs of cracks. Even very small fissures might cause some strange behavior that will drive you crazy down the road.

i did a lot of inspecting with the magnifying glass and bright light and not seeing anything I would recognize as further damage, except for one of the USB ports that was sitting at an odd angle and generally uncooperative: I don't see any crossed or otherwise banged up pins in it, but it does not work. its mate, right next to it, does, and the single on the opposite side works fine also. the performance, with the kbd gone, is fine best i can tell - great graphics performance for a beater.
As it turns out, now that I have worked it more carefully, the touchpad works - its tracking like it should [I am not sure what driver is in play - a windows 7 choice], and the double-tap on the pad works. the buttons actually do work, I find now, but they are not seated properly because I have to press VERY firmly on the left button to get a response at all, the right one is somewhat easier but still not usable for a normal person. it would seem that there's not a lot of variance in how that thing sits in its locale, ... I can't account for the gimpy performance. I've looked under there and tried to spot something amiss but since this is the first of these I've ever seen, not sure what I would recognize.

all in all, its progress. I'll be very impressed if the new keyboard just works right off - I still suspect something else is at work here
